PetCheck 2014 – Be Responsible and Chip In

 Thursday 24 April 2014

Dog owners across Bolsover District and North East Derbyshire are being urged to take advantage of free wellbeing checks and microchipping for dogs as a mobile pet checking unit is touring the area in May.

Last year 466 dogs received free microchips and 264 animals received free pet health checks across Bolsover District Council and North East Derbyshire District Council areas and they have once again joined forces with the PDSA to offer these services to local dog owners.

The PDSA Health Check Roadshow will take to the streets between 20-23 May to offer free wellbeing checks for dogs – including weight, eyes, teeth, ears, coat condition and general fitness, all undertaken by an experienced veterinary nurse. Information on the care of other popular pets will also be available.

Bolsover District Council Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor Dennis Kelly, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said “As you can see from the figures, these roadshows are extremely popular with our local residents. It gives people the chance to get their pets health checked out, have a chat with the professionals about any concerns they have and also pick up some useful tips on animal behaviour and ownership – all free of charge.”

In addition to the veterinary nurse, the Council’s Dog Warden will be on hand to provide free dog microchipping – something which will become compulsory for all dogs in 2016.

The authorities will also be offering advice about canine behaviour and responsible dog ownership – as well as handing out free poop scoop bags at each of the events.

Councillor Nick Foster, North East Derbyshire District Council’s Member with responsibility for the Environment, added, “For any dog owner, their pet is part of the family and they want to make sure they are fit and healthy and stay safe and this scheme provides them with that peace of mind. In addition to the health checks, the free microchipping is an important way in which owners can also look after their dogs and with the proposed new government legislation making it compulsory from 2016, it is in the interest of owners to take advantage of this free offer.”
