Sutton Scarsdale Hall (Ruin)
This dramatic 18th Century hilltop shell of an imposing baroque mansion still retains remnants of its former rich plaster decoration and is under the care of English Heritage having recently undergone a programme of consolidation and repair.
From its early days as the home of the 4th (and last) Earl of Scarsdale, Nicholas Leake, the Hall was passed from hand to hand until a speculator bought it and stripped it of everything that could be torn from it. Ruined and rotting, it was listed for demolition until, with just one day to spare, Osbert Sitwell from Renishaw Hall bought it. Now owned by English Heritage, it makes an ideal spot for a picnic.
Four miles south east of Chesterfield, sign posted off the A632 at Arkwright Town.
Opening Times
Open all year. Daily from 10.00am to dusk.
