Housing Benefit is a scheme which helps people on low incomes to pay their rent. Housing and Council Tax Benefit is usually granted from the Monday following the date that the claim form is received.   However, if you have been late in applying for benefit, and can show us good reason for your claim being delayed we may be able to backdate your benefit.   If you want to apply for backdating, you must put your claim in writing, explaining the reason why your claim wasn't made earlier. Council Tax Benefit is a rebate scheme to help people who are on low incomes to pay their Council Tax.   The Council assesses both your income and the council tax we charge you according to rules laid down by the Government. Generally, the higher your income is, the less benefit you will receive.   Use the links on the left of the screen to find out more information.    You can also contact us (details below).
We will credit your council tax account with the amount of benefit due for the rest of the financial year (up to 31st of March).   We will send you a new council tax bill showing the amount you owe after the benefit has been taken off. It will also show you your new instalments (if any).   If you have nothing more to pay we will let you know. If your account goes into credit, we will arrange to refund the overpayment to you.
