Backdating your Benefit claim
Housing and Council Tax Benefit is usually granted from the Monday following the date that the claim form is received.
However, if you have been late in applying for benefit, and can show us good reason for your claim being delayed we may be able to backdate your benefit.
If you want to apply for backdating, you must put your claim in writing, explaining the reason why your claim wasn't made earlier. We will consider your claim and will let you know our decision in writing. If you do not agree with our decision you have the right to appeal against it. See our page on Appeals.
Please note: not knowing that you could claim Housing/Council Tax Benefit will not be accepted as a good reason for backdating by itself.
