A Guide to Housing Benefit

Housing Benefit is a scheme which helps people on low incomes to pay their rent. It cannot be paid to homeowners to help pay their mortgage (owner-occupiers may be able to get help with their mortgage interest from Income Support or income-based Jobseeker's allowance).

The Council assesses both your income and your weekly rent according to rules laid down by the Government. Generally, the higher your income is, the less benefit you will receive.
