How is it paid?

Council Tenants

If you rent your home from the council, we will credit your benefit to your rent account every week.

Private Rented & Housing Association Tenants

If you rent from a private landlord or a housing association we will send your Housing Benefit direct to your bank account. We can either pay direct to you, or you can choose to have your benefit paid direct to your landlord or letting agent.

The Council may pay your benefit to your landlord without your consent if your landlord has proved, to our satisfaction, that your rent is more than 8 weeks in arrears.

Your Housing Benefit is normally paid in arrears at a frequency of fortnightly or 4 weekly, depending on how your rent is charged.

Please note: you will need to open a bank account for your Housing Benefit to be paid into if you do not already have one.
