Housing Benefit - Who can apply?
If you are responsible for paying rent on your home to a private landlord, a housing association or to North East Derbyshire Council you may be able to claim Housing Benefit. People who rent rooms in hostels, people who share a flat or house, boarders, joint tenants and sub-tenants are also eligible to apply. You may make a claim if:
- you are responsible for paying the rent, or are the partner of someone who is responsible.
- you have income and capital (savings or property) of less than £16,000.
- you are receiving a form of benefit such as Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance, Working Tax Credit, Disability Benefits, Pension Credits or Retirement Pension and you are dependent on it.
- you are on a low income from employment or self-employment.
- you are a full-time student on a low income and any of the following apply:
- you are a lone parent- you are disabled- you are under 19 and following a further education course- you are aged over 60- you and your partner are students on low incomes, and you have dependant children
Please note:
- If you have recently come from abroad you will normally be required to demonstrate that you have the right to stay in the country
- If you are an asylum seeker we can only pay you benefit if your asylum application was made at the time of arrival into the country, and you have been granted refugee status
