Mandatory Relief

General Stores and Post Offices

The occupier of a general store or post office in a rural settlement is entitled to Mandatory Relief if it is the only general store or post office in that area and it's Rateable Value is 6,000 or less. Mandatory Relief is given at 50% of the annual charge. The Council may also award Discretionary Rural Rate Relief against all or part of the remaining 50%.

Pubs and Petrol Filling Stations

With effect from 5th April 2001, 50% Mandatory Relief is also available to pubs and petrol filling stations that are the only one in that rural settlement, and have a Rateable Value of 9000 or less. The Council may also award Discretionary Rural Rate Relief against all or part of the remaining 50%.

Food Shops and Former Agricultural Premises

With effect from 15th August 2001, a new category was introduced to assist rural shops that sell food for human consumption, and new small-scale non-agricultural businesses on farms. These properties will now also qualify for 50% Mandatory Relief provided that the Rateable Value is 6000 or less. However, the business must only have been operating for a maximum of 183 days prior to 15th August 2001 to qualify. The Council may also award Discretionary Rural Rate Relief against all or part of the remaining 50%.
