Small Business Rate Relief
This page explains the Small Business Rates Relief Scheme.
The details shown below are the existing scheme, however temporary changes came into effect from October 2010, see below for more details.
Small Business Rates Relief is available to ratepayers who occupy either:
- one property with a rateable value of below 18,000, or
- one main property and other additional properties (providing the additional properties have individual rateable values of less than 2,600) and the combined rateable value of all the properties is under 18,000.
All eligible businesses with rateable values below 18,000 will have their liability calculated using a lower multiplier than the standard multiplier used for other properties outside the scheme. Additionally, those businesses with rateable values below 6,000 will get 50% rate relief on their liability. This relief will decrease on a sliding scale of 1% for every 120 of rateable value over 6,000, up to 11,999.
The Small Business Rate Relief scheme will be funded by a supplement on the rate bill of those businesses not eligible for the relief. This supplement is built into the standard multiplier.
Do I need to apply for Small Business Rates Relief?
Prior to April 2012 an application form for Small Business Rates Relief had to be completed. Once awarded the relief could continue until the next revaluation of Non-Domestic properties (which was scheduled for 01 April 2015).
Although an application form is no longer required, we will still need written details to confirm that the ratepayer meets the eligibility criteria. Please contact us on the details below for further advice on the information required, or complete and return the application form which will still be accepted. Provided the ratepayer continues to satisfy the conditions for relief, it will continue in each new valuation period.
Different rateable value thresholds apply in the city of London.
PLEASE NOTE:
Temporary changes were made to the Small Business Rates Relief Scheme with effect from October 2010, to find out about the changes and how they might affect you see our Amended Small Business Rates Relief Scheme page.
