About Council Tax
Council Tax is a locally set charge that is payable on domestic properties. It was introduced in April 1993 to replace the Community Charge or Poll Tax, which in turn had replaced the old domestic Rates in 1990.
It is collected to help pay for local services such as schools, roads, libraries, police, fire service and rubbish collection. For more details about the services that the Council Tax is spent on see our page on the Cost of Local Government Services.
The Council Tax is a property based charge that also takes into account the number of adults in the household. The amount you pay depends on where you live within the district, what band your property has been given, and your personal circumstances.
Most properties will be subject to the council tax and there will usually be only one bill per property, whether it is a house, bungalow, flat, maisonette, mobile home or houseboat, and whether it is owned or rented.
These pages will help you to find out what the charges are, who should pay them, and how and where to do so. There are also details about how you can reduce your bill and the forms you can use to make claims. We will also show you what the Council spends your money on.
