Council Tax Reduction for people with Disabilities
If you or someone who lives with you has a disability, and your home has been adapted to meet their needs, you may qualify for a reduction in your Council Tax.
You may receive a reduction if:
- a room (other than a bathroom, kitchen or toilet) is mainly used and required to meet the needs of the disabled person; or
- a second kitchen or bathroom (not toilet) is provided to meet the needs of the disabled person; or
- the disabled person needs to use a wheelchair in the property and your home has been adapted to allow sufficient floor space to allow the use of the wheelchair.
Under this scheme, the person who pays the Council Tax will be charged as if the property was in the next lowest band.
For example, band 'C' properties would be charged as if in band 'B'.
With effect from 1st April 2000 a reduction of 1/9 of the charge for band D applies to properties in band A.
This reduction can be granted in addition to discount or Council Tax Benefit.
