Dance Fit was a partnership project between North East Derbyshire District Council, Chesterfield Borough Council, NHS Derbyshire County and Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire Schools Sports Partnerships which ended on 31st March 2011.
The project was a dance based exercise class developed for women and especially designed to put enjoyment and energy into getting fit. The programme covered a variety of dance styles including Street, Jazz, Salsa, Disco, Bollywood, Rock & Roll and River Dance. Classes were delivered at venues across Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire District on a 'drop in' basis by fully qualified instructors.
Participants were invited to take part in an online survey about the project in December 2010, the results of which were published in a Survey Report. Results from the survey indicate that 64% of participants have been inspired to engage regularly in physical activity and 81% have made new friends through the project. Comments from participants include "great way of exercising with all the ingredients for a fun workout.....music, dance and laughter" and "the class fills a gap in the market, I will be really disappointed when it finishes."
During the time it ran, Dance Fit saw 1097 ladies clock up 7539 attendances at 766 sessions across 23 venues. The programme also employed 7 instructors and created a self employment opportunity for one instructor who has gone on to run her own dance and fitness classes.
