We Are the Champions

Using its NHS Derbyshire County Choosing Health funding allocation CHART LSP has commissioned the Volunteer Centre Chesterfield & North East Derbyshire to develop a network of Community Health Champions (CHC) and Older Persons Peer Support Health Champions (OPPS) across disadvantaged communities in Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire.

Operating from April 2011 to March 2013, the project will recruit and train over 100 volunteers from the community, existing voluntary organisations and front-line workers as accredited Health Trainers to provide support to local residents to improve their lifestyle choices, health and well-being and financial inclusion, supporting the delivery of CHART LSP Strategic Priorities across all LSP Flagship Projects.

27 volunteers had been signed by June, with 8 actively supporting people in our most disadvantaged communities. 20 CHCs have started Royal Society for Public Health training to gain a Level  2 Award in Understanding Health Improvement, some have also chosen to receive alcohol awareness training, one CHC plans to do some basic cooking skills to share with others too!

These inspirational people are fast becoming valuable community assets, armed with new skills and knowledge, being in the right place at the right time, to provide tailored support to improve people’s health and help them in practical ways to access a wide range of services in their local communities.

Case Stories
A man wishing to volunteer (a smoker who also has mobility problems) had been referred to the GP but heard nothing about treatment. The volunteer was referred to a NHS Health Trainer by the Volunteer Centre—who signposted him to Waistwise. A Community Health Champion provided buddy support to his first appointment at Staveley Healthy Living Centre. That volunteer has been inspired to become both a Community Health Champion and Older People’s Peer Support Champion.

A man attended the Volunteer Centre wanting to volunteer on young people’s projects—became interested in CHC as a route to a job in that field and needed to gain practical experience to develop his skills. He wanted to peer support and act as a role model, address lifestyle issues, like alcohol and smoking awareness. He was signposted to a volunteering opportunity at Hasland Youth Club as a Coffee Bar Assistant to act in a dual role as Community Health Champion and volunteer Youth Worker, helping young people who are living in environments affected by alcohol and drug use.

A volunteer has been supported to become a Community Health Champion, undertook RSPH training over 2 days and attended Support Meeting to discuss projects they could support and NHS data recording requirements. Volunteer felt overwhelmed by level of research/project finding/data collection expected – she expected a constant supply of projects to volunteer on. VC responded by engaging with partners to establish this with sports centres, Communities That Work etc. The volunteer has now chosen to shadow a Health Trainer at Staveley HLC with the aim of supporting a client in physical activity. CHC also supporting clients at Sharley park Leisure Centre. Volunteer also attended Derbyshire Alcohol Advice Service training and continues to be an active CHC.

A volunteer attended RSPH training and support meeting to plan possible projects to work on. After contacting Hunloke Centre, decided to enrol on Healthy Eating Cookery Course at Clay Cross Community Centre for 10 week course in Sept and contact Fairplay Independent Living Group to work with them as a CHC. Helped VC set up Facebook page so all CHCs could easily communicate and support each other. Attended Alcohol Awareness Training and provided buddy support to clients at Staveley HLC/Barrow Hill and Waistwise appointment.

Shine in 2012

September saw the launch of an exciting project that aims to bring our communities together to celebrate the values of the Olympics and Paralympics.

The thirteen school clusters that make up the CHART LSP area will join forces to celebrate the Cultural Olympiad by running a design competition in schools and manufacturing 13 replica torches, with support from a range of LSP partners. The replica torches will be unveiled at an opening ceremony on 18th May 2012, marking the day that the official torch arrives on UK soil.

Organisations, ranging from workplaces to community groups will be able to register to receive one of the local replica torches to publicise their activities and increase local participation in a range of arts, heritage, sports, physical activity, tourism and volunteering opportunities, so we can help with legacy plans in our communities.

We are appealing to partners to tell us if they would like to collaborate in this unique local celebration at our Replica Torch Launch Event planned for 18th May 2012 at the b2net stadium. CFC have approved our plans in principle to use the pitch, upstairs meeting area, concourses and car park on this day, which coincides with the date the official torch arrives on UK soil.

Proposals are being developed to share the space on this day, for a value for money approach that will bring a diverse range of activities and interests together. Ideas so far include:
  • Representatives of the 13 school clusters receive their replica torch on the pitch to start their journey across the LSP area with appearances from local sporting figures;
  • A possible business networking event to promote workplace health—would any business partners be interested in hosting a business breakfast, using the upstairs meeting space?
  • A launch of the In Season recipes in collaboration with Midlands Co-operative and CFC players;
  • Taster activities from a CBC inspired project with sports clubs to encourage under represented groups into sport;
  • Promotion of arts projects by young people;
  • Invitation to Healthy Places Award winners.

If you would like to be involved, please contact Dawn Raybould at the LSP Office.

In Season

A new partnership with the LSP has kicked off with the Midlands Cooperative to tap into food outlets to promote better local access to fresh food through their stores.

A unique twist of this project is the involvement of Chesterfield Football Club who will front the marketing campaign with the Co-op by promoting fresh affordable recipes endorsed by 11 first team players and Chester the Field Mouse. The recipes will give an insight into being match fit and leading a healthier lifestyle with quick and easy tips.

We aim to start our promotion in April to reach younger audiences, families, men under 30, and older people through CFC’s Extra time Project. NHS Derbyshire County will support the development of 12 seasonal recipes. The project aims to deliver promotional events with a launch at a home match v Rochdale in April (sponsored by Midlands Co-operative), a special promotion at our SHINE 2012 launch event on 18th May and an in-store promotion at the North Wingfield store.
There are a number of Co-operative stores throughout our area and we hope to develop an approach that will engage local people.  The United Nations has designated 2012 the Internatinal Year of Co-operatives and Midlands Co-operative Society members are keen to be active. If any partner can add value to the project, contact the LSP Team.

Market Fresh

Market Fresh aims to improve access to affordable fresh food for local people to enjoy through special events and promotions, that can be exchanged on markets in Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire.

The first event will be held later in the year featuring cooking demonstrations by local chefs and tasting sessions using quality fresh produce donated by traders on the market. There will be information about purchasing and storage tips, seasonal produce guide, the benefits of cooking from fresh, money and time saving ideas and FREE Market Fresh Recipes to suit different lifestyles.

The Fire Service will be promoting kitchen fire safety with a wok fire demo. A special promotion leading up to the event will provide an opportunity to obtain vouchers that can be exchanged at six participating market traders for free produce and money off so people can try out our complementary Market Fresh Recipes at home. We aim to help promote our local markets so people keep coming back for more.

We need partners to help us by promoting the project in our communities, any offers from suitably qualified cooks to support activity on the day will be most welcome and using your outlets to reach those people who need our help the most, while they are accessing other key services - if you think you can help, please contact the LSP Team.

Seeds Planted in Staveley

Trevor Haynes, Housing Services Neighbourhood Ranger has brought together a “blooming” great team of tenants and managers of CBC sheltered housing schemes at Markham Court, Duckmanton and Aston Court, Staveley, Springwell Community and Duckmanton Junior Schools, the Staveley Hall Garden Centre and Staveley Town Council to provide residents with raised beds and tubs so people who move to sheltered schemes are helped to continue with gardening and make it more manageable.

Tenants families and friends are also encouraged to take pride in their communal gardens and use them for socialising. Strong relationships between tenants and the schools have been rooted—they have planted flowers and vegetables and visit regularly to maintain them, clear up, pick up gardening skills, learn about nature and the environment across the generations, with reciprocal visits to the school to attend lunch clubs and Christmas meals. Aston Court and Markham Court have now formed gardening associations to make further improvements to their communal gardens.
