What is Local Democracy Week?
The Local Democracy week campaign aims to help young people see local government as relevant and useful, explore the meaning of citizenship, encourage young people to take part and to have their say and get involved in the democratic processes in their area.
What do we want to achieve?
Like all Councils across the country, North East Derbyshire has the challenge to encourage young people to take an interest and become involved in local democracy. The Council is committed to raising awareness of the opportunities for involvement and developing new ways of representing the views such as:
- A robust mechanism for regular consultation with young people across the area - a Youth Panel that will function along similar lines to the Citizens Panel.
- A district wide Young Persons District Forum that will augment the neighbourhood forums.
- An arts forum to help guide and develop creative opportunities for young people.
How are we going to do this?
A programme of activities has been planned for the week beginning 15th October providing a mixture of film, drama, drawing and web based dialogue to encourage young people to fully participate in Democracy week activities; offering a positive experience that enables them to ‘have a voice’ and hopefully view engaging with the Council in a positive light.
