Council Land and Property
Our Estates and Valuation Section hold details of all land and premises that the Council owns. They have access to details of acquisitions and disposals, together with leases, lettings, licenses (including grazing), easements, rights of way and industrial site lettings. The only exception being:
- market lettings which are separately managed through private operators (see the Local Markets page)
- Council owned housing and domestic garage sites which are managed by Rykneld Homes
The Council also produces a regular Sites and Premises Guide that gives details not only of all Council land and property available to lease, but also commercial land and property too. To download a copy of the guide, please go to the Sites and Premises webpage.
Other Council owned land and property which is being marketed for sale or rent on the open market can be found on the Land & Property Available webpage.
Can you tell me whether the land next to my house is owned by the Council?
Yes, provided the precise location of the land concerned can be accurately described.
What do I do if I want to know who owns private property?
Please contact the Land Registry on:
Tel: 0207 917 8888
Please note that the Land Registry will be unable to assist you if it turns out that the land concerned is unregistered, in which case you may wish to make enquiries with local neighbours.
How do I go about renting grazing land from the Council?
The Council lets out parcels of land it own for grazing. There is generally a grazing list and you can obtain more information about availability by contacting the team on:
Tel:01246 217197or complete our Estates and Valuation online enquiry form.

What information do I need to give you before you can tell me whether the Council owns a particular property or area of land?
We need to know the boundaries of the land in question and if possible the full postal address. The boundaries are often difficult to describe precisely over the telephone without looking together at a detailed map (which can be arranged for personal visits). We should be able to tell from a telephone enquiry whether the Council owns the land nearby, but for a more precise answer, a plan showing the exact boundaries of the land can be submitted by fax or post to us (details below).
Is there a charge for this information?
Not at present. However, dependent upon the future demand for this service, the Council may consider introducing a charge to offset the administrative costs.
Please note that the District Council only provides Estates Management and Valuation services for the land and property it owns. These services are not available to the general public.
