CPA Results 2004
The Audit Commission inspection of North East Derbyshire District Council has found that it provides good quality services for residents. However, it is judged to be 'weak' overall.
The finding is contained in a report issued by the Audit Commission following a week-long inspection of the authority carried out in January 2004 under the Comprehensive Performance Assessment regime.
The Council acknowledges many of the conclusions detailed in the report but is, nevertheless, disappointed to have been rated 'weak'. The Council has already begun work to tackle the areas for improvement identified by the Commission and is actively engaged in positive discussions with the Commission about the best way forward.
Council leader, David Nuttall, said:
"The inspection report has some very positive things to say about the good quality services provided to the residents of North East Derbyshire."
"We are also judged to be working hard to promote the economic prosperity of the District by supporting businesses and helping to strengthen local communities affected by years of industrial decline."
"However, the report also highlights a number of weaknesses, most of which were recognised by ourselves prior to the inspection. We are now setting about dealing with them in a systematic way and will be looking particularly at promoting a sustainable long-term plan for the economic, environmental and social well-being of our communities."
"The Council has the opportunity to be re-assessed within the next two years and we will be looking for a big leap in our assessment score next time on the back of a great deal of hard work to improve."
