It’s official - North East Derbyshire is one of the safest places in the UK

North East Derbyshire has been highlighted as one of the safest places to live in the UK, following an assessment by the Government into the quality of public services.

The results of the first annual ‘Oneplace’ assessments have just been published by the Audit Commission, covering all areas of England.

Oneplace differs from previous inspections because it focuses not just on councils, but on the quality of all services in the area including the Police, Fire and NHS.

Key findings from the North East Derbyshire assessment include:

  • It’s one of the safest places to live. Crime and anti-social behaviour have been falling and people get on well with each other.

  • Local organisations work well together to help people lead healthier lives. Successful initiatives highlighted include exercise schemes to help people recover after operations and programmes to encourage children to get active and eat healthier.

  • North East Derbyshire has coped with the recession better than other parts of the country. We’ve put measures in place to support businesses and has helped dozens of unemployed people in to work and training.

  • Recycling rates have improved dramatically. Just under half of all household waste is recycled, beating our targets.

  • There are not enough low cost homes in the District, though we are putting plans are in place to increase the supply of homes for rent or part-ownership.

  • We have involved local people in deciding NEDDC’s priorities, and we’re looking to the future to match its spending to the needs of local people.

  • There is a strong focus on providing value for money public services, and services are recognised as being generally low cost.

Publication of Oneplace follows the Place Survey, the most comprehensive survey ever in North East Derbyshire. It asked residents about issues such as community safety and the quality of local services. The results, published in June 2009, show people in North East Derbyshire feel safer and happier than most areas of the UK.

NEDDC leader Councillor Graham Baxter said: “The Place Survey found that North East Derbyshire is one of the best places to live, where crime is low and people get on well. Oneplace backs up these findings, giving further evidence that local public services work well together to provide value for money.

“Although the assessment is extremely positive there is always room for improvement and we will continue to work with other local organisations to make sure we provide the best possible services that meet the needs of local people.”
