Tackling deprivation – Making a Difference
During summer 2010 a new partnership was formed in North East Derbyshire to improve the lives of people in our most deprived communities. The partnership, called ‘Shaping the Future’, is one of the first of its kind.
It has been chosen by Local Government Improvement and Development (LGID) to be a national pilot. It is hoped that lessons learned here can be used to develop a new approach to tackling deprivation around the country.
‘Shaping the Future’ has taken on even greater importance following the government’s review of public sector spending, since it focuses on closer cooperation between partner organisations to direct their funding and staffing to make a real difference.
‘Shaping the Future’ developed following research by North East Derbyshire District Council into the challenges facing our local communities. This was the first time that such an in-depth report had been compiled in the district. A copy of the Shaping the Future report is available to view below.
In particular the research focused on the IMD - or Indices of Multiple Deprivation – looking at areas such as the economy, skills and training, housing, health and crime.
Our work builds of a national review of health inequality, conducted by Sir Michael Marmot.
Armed with this detailed data, the Council organised a conference during July 2010 to mobilise local, regional and national partners. Over 50 organisations attended and the ‘Shaping the Future’ partnership was born.
