Welcome to my web page

Councillor Nigel Barker

My name is Nigel Barker  and I am a North East Derbyshire District Councillor representing North Wingfield Central Ward.

I was an elected member between 1987 and 1991 and was elected again in 2003 and represent the Labour Party. I am also a member of North Wingfield Parish Council.

I hope you find the information you need on my web page, but if not please contact me - my details are at the bottom of the page.

A bit about me...

I was born in 1957 and have lived in North Wingfield for most of my life. Attending the Infant and Junior Schools, passing the 11+ and going to Tupton Hall where I gained 6 ‘O’ Levels.

I left at 15 to work at the Glass Works in the Physics Laboratory, I did this for 3 years leaving to go down the pit which I did for 12 years, working at Shirebrook and Pleasley and finally on the Area Salvage, before taking Redundancy in 1989.

I went on to do a Degree in Social Studies between 1989 and 1992 which I passed with a 2(1).

I now work for Derbyshire County Council as a Day Service worker working with people with learning difficulties.

I became involved in politics during the miners strike in 1984/1985 joining the Labour Party. I have been a Parish Councillor since 1987. I am also a school Governor at the Primary School.

My hobbies include walking and football, I have played local football both Saturdays and Sundays, I now spend my free time walking (I have recently completed the Pennine Way) and watching football.

I enjoy being a Councillor and try to ensure that the community I represent receives the resources and services that it entitled to. I have played a leading role in getting resources for a new Community Centre, Skate Park and Multi Use Games Area.

I’m now on the Cabinet at the District Council with responsibility for Environment and Waste Management which is a massive issue for everyone and crucial with the threat of Global Warming.
