Local Election Frequently Asked Questions.
Why do I need to register on the Electoral Register?
To be able to vote in the local elections your name must be on the Electoral Register for North East Derbyshire. It is updated on a rolling registration basis, but there is a cut off point before an election – to be able to vote in the 2011 elections you must have been registered by 5pm on 14 April 2011.
How do I know if I’m on the Electoral Register?
If you have already registered and your details have not changed e.g. you have not moved house - you will be on the register at your current address, and therefore able to vote in the local elections.
If you are unsure, contact our Electoral Services team on the details below.
Is there still time to register and ensure I can vote in the local elections on 5 May?
No, the deadline was 5pm on Thursday 14 April 2011.
How do I register for future elections?
You can register by downloading an application form below – print this out, complete the form and return it to our Electoral Services team. Alternatively you can fill in a form online on the About My Vote website, but you will still need to print it and post it.
You can ask us to send you a paper copy – contact our Electoral Services team, or pick one up from our offices (details below). Remember, if you have not already registered to vote you will not be able to vote in these elections.
How do I vote?
You can:
- Vote in person at a polling station on the day
- Vote by post
- Nominate someone to vote at a polling station for you (vote by proxy)
You will have been given, or sent, a ballot paper listing the names of all the candidates who are standing for election. The ballot paper will tell you how many candidates to vote for and you do this by marking the box next to the name(s) of your chosen candidate(s).
Where do I go to vote in person?
If you are on the electoral register, we will have sent you a poll card telling you which polling station to go to and where it is. Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm.
How do I vote by post?
Providing you had already applied for a postal vote before 14 April, your ballot paper will have been sent to you and it must be returned in good time to arrive by 10pm on polling day in order to be counted. If you have not received your postal ballot papers you must contact us before 5pm on Thursday 5th May to get a replacement.
How do I vote by proxy?
You need to have applied to vote by proxy before 21 April. Your proxy will need to go to the polling station to vote on your behalf. If you become too ill to vote yourself you can apply for an emergency proxy before 5pm on polling day, 5th May. Contact our Electoral Services team for advice (details below).
