Registering to Vote and the annual canvass
You can only vote in an election if your name is on the Register of Electors.
The Register of Electors is a public document listing all registered and eligible electors at their qualifying address within the District. There are two ways to get your name on the Electoral Register, through the Annual Canvass or through Rolling Registration.
Annual Canvass
At the end of August each year we send a Register of Electors form to every household within North East Derbyshire asking them to register all eligible voters and anyone over the age of 16.
The details of everyone currently registered to vote at that address will appear pre-printed on the form. Young people who are 16 or 17 may be listed on the form, and will appear with their date of birth if they become 18 during the life of the register. However, they are not eligible to vote until they are 18.
If the details are still correct, you can either respond by internet, SMS, telephone or by returning the signed completed form in the pre-paid envelope. If the details are incorrect, you need to amend them on the form and return the form in the pre-paid envelope provided.
Please help us to save money by returning your form without delay and cut down on reminders.
Reminders
If you do not respond to this initial form, a reminder will be sent out to you at the end of September with a final reminder at the end of October, when you will be visited by one of our door to door canvassers to ensure the Electoral Register is complete and accurate. All our canvassers carry official North East Derbyshire identification cards to undertake this process.
Production of the Register
The Electoral Register is updated each year during the annual canvass period and a new Register is produced on the 1st December.
The Electoral Register is often used to confirm your address, particularly if you are applying for credit such as a mortgage, credit card or a contract mobile telephone. If you are not registered, you may be refused credit as well as losing you right to vote in local and national elections.
Please note it is a legal requirement that you respond to this form each year and failure to return a completed form is an offence, which could lead to a fine of up to £1,000.
Rolling Registration
You can still register to vote at other times of the year, such as if you move house or are new to the area.
You will need to download and return the application form at the bottom of this page or you can ask us to send a form out to you. If you are unsure whether you are already registered, please contact the Electoral Services team to confirm your details.
When we receive your form we will add you to the list of new additions. Other electors can object to your name being added to the list, and if this happens we will write to you.
If we receive no objections we will change your details within a few weeks of receiving your form, depending upon when your application is received (please see the timetable which is also available to download as a PDF at the bottom of the page). We will send you a letter to tell you that you have been added to the Electoral Register.
Updates to the Register of Electors are published on a monthly basis from January to September, but there are no monthly updates during the period of the annual canvass.
For 2012, a new Register is being published on 16 October due to the Police & Crime Commissioner Election on 15 November 2012. There will be no monthly updates during August, September and October during the annual canvass period when all households have to register.
