Preparing for Flooding
Here are few links to useful information to help you prepare for flooding. We've also got information about how to get hold of sandbags.
Weather Warnings - find out the local forecasts and check if any severe weather warnings have been issued for your area.
Flood Warnings - online flood warnings, updated every 15 minutes. If you live close to a river or on a flood plain you can also register to receive flood warnings by telephoning 0845 988 1188.

Sandbags
We've teamed up with Derbyshire County Council are offering residents 10 free empty sandbags per property, along with information on how to fill and lay them. Residents can order and collect them from our the reception desk at our Saltergate office. Sandbags are no longer made of heavy sack, they are lightweight plastic and 10 sandbags fold neatly into a small carrier bag (provided).
Although you are responsible for protecting your own property, when a severe weather or severe flood warning is issued from the Met Office or the Environment Agency, Council’s across the County have agreed to supply filled sandbags, free of charge.
However, when there is high demand such as in June 2007, it may not be possible to get the sandbags to residents as quickly as hoped. Council’s are not an emergency service and filling sandbags on a large scale takes a considerable amount of time. Also, as experienced in Chesterfield, many roads can be closed due to flooding which may make it very difficult to distribute them. Therefore, if you have a supply already at home, you can take immediate action to protect your own property.
If your property insurance has either gone up or you have been refused cover because of your properties history of flooding then protecting your own property with flood protection products could help reduce your premiums or get you cover when you have previously been refused.
