Cemeteries

We manage and maintain three cemeteries at:

  • Church Side, Hasland
  • Ashley Lane, Killamarsh
  • Church Lane, Temple Normanton

We have put together some rules and procedures to explain how we will manage our cemeteries and to help guide the people using them. We understand that visiting a cemetery for whatever reason may be a difficult time, so these rules are designed to help make this a safe, respectful and peaceful time for everyone.

Here are just a few of the key points, for full details please download our Cemetery Rules guide at the foot of this page.

Arranging a funeral

Notice of interment

Notice of interment is required by completing the form below and must be arranged with the Cemetery Administrator at least 48 hours before the funeral; if the interment is required in a vault at least 3 days notice must be given. The period of notice does not include Saturdays, Sundays or Bank Holidays.

If a grave is to be re-opened a copy of the Exclusive Right or Deed of Bequeathment is required; if this is not available an indemnity form must be signed and returned to our Cemetery Administrator.  A copy of the Form of Indemnity is attached for downloading at the bottom of the page.

No interment can take place without the Registrar’s Certificate or Coroner’s Order for disposal which must be presented to the Cemetery Administrator at least 24 hours before the burial.

Exclusive rights

The person to whom the Exclusive Right is granted is allowed to decide who is buried in the grave and the type of memorial to be erected. This right can be assigned by deed or bequeathed by will to a relative or nominated person. Exclusive Rights are granted for 50 years, after which the purchaser has the option to extend the right up to a further 30 years.

Fees

All fees and charges are to be paid in full to the Cemetery Administrator.  Details of the cemetery fees and charges can be found in the Form of Indemnity at the bottom of the page.

Time of burials

Winter
Weekdays 9.00am to 2.30pm

Summer
Weekdays 9.00am to 3.00pm

Interments are only allowed during weekends or Bank Holidays where a coroner or medical practitioner certifies that immediate interment is necessary.

Before and after the funeral

We will prepare all graves ready for the burial and backfill the grave immediately after the funeral. All floral tributes which are brought to the graveside will be collected and placed on the finished grave. Where necessary graves will be provided with shoring and the surrounds covered with grass mats and liners; lowering webbing and surface biers are available for use by the Funeral Director.

What we allow

In the first six months after the burial has taken place floral tributes, pot plants and wooden crosses will be allowed on the grave; we will then remove any remaining items and arrange for the surface of the grave to be soiled over and turfed or seeded (when weather permits) so it is in keeping with the surrounding cemetery grounds. No fences, kerbs or other surrounds are allowed.

Because of unavoidable ground settlement, we advise that headstones are not placed for at least 6 months after a burial has taken place; this will allow for thorough settlement and reduce movement of the headstone.

Cremated remains

Cremated remains may be strewn or buried in the garden of remembrance or family grave with the permission of the Cemetery Administrator and the owner of the exclusive right. All applications must be accompanied with a certificate from the crematorium.

Memorials

Memorials must be approved in advance by us, installed by a memorial mason from our approved list and in accordance with National Association of Memorial Masons (NAMM) Code of Working Practice.  Temporary grave markers in the form of wooden crosses are allowed on the grave for the first six months following the interment date. We will charge a fee for the erection of a grave marker and this fee will be off set against the charge of any future permanent grave memorial. the Cemetery Administrator may be able to extend this 6 month period up to a maximum of a further 6 months after which all temporary markers will be removed. At no time must glass vases, bottles or other containers be placed on any grave or cremated remains plot. Please see the Cemetery Rules for full details.

Safety of memorials

Maintenance of memorials is the responsibility of the person that owns the Exclusive Rights or their nominated person, and we will make an annual inspection to make sure that memorials are being properly maintained. We may dismantle and lay flat memorials that are in an unsafe condition and do our best to contact the person responsible.

Gardens of Remembrance

In the Gardens of Remembrance only one memorial is allowed per plot, and must be mounted on the concrete slab provided, as shown in the Cemetery Rules.

Floral tributes should be placed in the vase/block holders provided and not on the grass or flower beds. Plaques will be supplied by the Council, contact us for more details.

Gardens on graves

All our cemeteries are designated lawned areas, no gardens are allowed.

Maintaining our cemeteries

Unfortunately ground settlement is unavoidable; we will monitor graves for 6-12 months after the funeral to ensure that soil levels are maintained. After settlement we will prepare the soil surface and sow grass seed over the area, in keeping with the surrounding cemetery grounds, and will keep our cemeteries up to the highest standard possible. This will include:
  • Mowing grassed areas
  • Maintaining boundary hedges and fences
  • Maintaining floral gardens of remembrance
  • Maintaining levels of the grave plots to harmonise with the surrounding grassed areas
  • Keeping the cemetery clean and tidy
  • Maintaining trees and shrubs (excluding unauthorised plantings)
  • Removing spent floral tributes
  • Removing Christmas wreaths (these will be removed in late February to early March prior to the onset of grass cutting operations)
  • Safety inspections of memorials
  • Maintaining accurate records of interments

Woodland Burials

We currently do not offer a woodland burial service.
