Noise Nuisance
North East Derbyshire receives more than 500 complaints each year about noise. Unreasonable noise can come from residential or industrial/commercial premises.
Types of Noise Problems We Deal With:
The Environmental Health Service has powers to deal with a wide range of noise problems including:
- Loud Music
- Barking Dogs
- Audible Intruder Alarms
- DIY
- Noise from Pubs and Clubs
- Noise from Domestic Premises
- Construction Site Noise
- Audible Bird Scarers
If you experiencing unwanted noise there are various things that you can do.
Informal Action
If possible we advise that you speak to the people causing the noise. They may simply be unaware that they are causing a noise problem and often a friendly informal approach is enough to sort the situation out and maintain good relations.
Making a Complaint to the Council
If you want to make a complaint about noise you should contact us at the Environmental Health Service. (Please see contact details at the bottom of this page)
Please remember in order for us to investigate a complaint we need as much detail as possible about the noise i.e.
- Where the noise in coming from
- What time of day/night the noise occurs
- Duration of noise
- Character of noise

If you live in a Council House and the noise is coming from another Council Tenant we will usually ask you to contact your local Area Housing Office.
Service Response to Complaints
We aim to reply to all noise complaints within 3 working days. It is also Council Policy for an officer to make a maximum of 2 visits to check whether a noise nuisance exists.
Taking Your Own Legal Action
If we are unable to confirm that a noise nuisance exists following our investigation we can give you advice on how you can take your own legal action, if you wish to pursue the matter further.
