Water Quality

We work alongside government agencies and water companies to ensure the safety of the water in our district.

Responsibility for water quality is divided up between a number of organisations:

The mains water supply for North East Derbyshire is provided by Severn Trent Water and Yorkshire Water and the quality of the water they supply is regulated by the National Drinking Water Inspectorate.

We monitor private drinking water supplies, such as springs and bore holes, and take action to make sure that they are safe for human consumption and take steps to protect the source of the supplies. We also monitor Infectious Diseases to ensure that there is no threat to public health and carry our regular testing of the water in our public swimming pools.

The Environment Agency is responsible for monitoring and controlling the quality of surface water, groundwater and the water in rivers and watercourses (among other things).

Private Water Supplies

Some properties have their own private water supply that is on not provided by a water company such as Severn Trent or Yorkshire Water. We carry out risk assessments and sampling of private water supplies across the district to make sure that the water is safe and fit to drink. See our Private Water Supplies page for more details.
