Nuisance Parking

Enviro-crime - Don't Stand For It!
Nuisance parking can cause obstruction and uses up valuable car parking spaces.

We're determined to stop people using the public highway to run their businesses and will get tough on those who do as part of our Don't Stand For It! campaign against enviro-crime.

Find out below what we're doing to stop nuisance parking and how you might be affected.

What is nuisance parking?

Basically, it's when the public highway is used to sell or fix cars as a business. This can cause a significant nuisance to local residents as vehicles take up parking space, can look unsightly, can lead to damage of the local environment (for example when oil is spilled or leaked) and may also be a danger to passers by.

What can we do?

We will target people who use the road as a mock showroom to sell 2 or more vehicles as a business, and those that use the road as a mock workshop. This behaviour is unfair to residents who are deprived of using the road themselves to park vehicles and go about their daily lives.

We can issue fixed penalty notices of £75 for these offences and the culprits could end up in court with a fine of up to £2500.

These courses of action don't apply to private individuals selling or fixing their own car, unless it causes an unreasonable annoyance to their neighbours. It's worth noting though that the police can take action against someone carrying out non-emergency maintenance on their car if it causes an obstruction.

People who carry out these activities on their own land, for example on their drive or front garden, could still be committing an offence under planning regulations - let us know if you have any concerns.

How to report nuisance parking

We want to stop people committing these offences and take action against offenders, but we can only do this if we know about it, so here's how you can help: to report someone that is carrying out a vehicle selling or repairing business in the street, please contact our Clean and Green hotline (details below) or use our online form.
