Our Environmental Enforcement Policy
Helping You To Keep On The Right Side Of The Law
One of the major roles of the Council's Environmental Health Section is to enforce legislation to protect the public, the environment and groups such as consumers and workers. Examples of such work not only includes the enforcement of food safety standards at catering premises, ensuring health and safety in the workplace, and the control of noise and air pollution from industrial and trade premises, but also the enforcement of legislation against the general public relating to things such as noise nuisance, breaches of smoke control orders, dog fouling, fly-tipping and littering.
The Policy is a commitment to business and local residents that the Environmental Health Section will follow good practice when enforcing regulations. It sets out what businesses and others who have to comply with regulations enforced by the Council can expect, and outlines the principles and procedures that enforcement officers will follow.
This Enforcement Policy emphasises how we want to work with the business community and others to help them comply with regulations. However, we will continue to take strong action against those who deliberately flout the law in order to protect peoples health and the environment.
In developing this Policy we consulted with local business, trade and community organisations. We would also like to hear your comments on the Policy and how we enforce legislation.
