Complaints about food products and food premises
We work with businesses across the district to make sure that the food they make and sell is safe to eat.
If you've got a complaint about a food product you've bought, or a place where you've eaten, we want to hear from you.
Food Products
Let us know if you're unhappy about food or drink that you've bought from a shop or takeaway in North East Derbyshire.
Typical problems we deal with are:
- foreign objects in food
- food that has gone mouldy or smells or tastes 'off'
- food that has been sold after its 'Use By' date
- food or drink that has made you feel unwell after eating or drinking it
We may want to visit you to discuss the problem and take all your details, it helps if you still have a sample of the food and the packaging that it came in. We will want to know things such as when and where you bought the product, how you have stored or prepared it and any effects it has had if you have consumed it.
Contact us on the number below if you want to discuss making a food complaint. We can only investigate problems with products that were bought in the district, but are happy to offer advice and refer on other cases to the relevant authority.
Food Businesses
We work with food business across North East Derbyshire to make sure that they meet hygiene and safety standards. The types of businesses we deal with range from takeaways and restaurants to manufacturers and packing plants. We even deal with non-commercial establishments such as nursing homes, hospitals and schools. If you've got a concern about a food business in our area, let us know.

If you have been unwell and suspect food poisoning, we may visit you to take more details and samples.
Even if you live or work in North East Derbyshire, we can only investigate if the business is in our district, but can refer you to the correct authority if we can't deal with the problem.
Please note: we can't follow up anonymous reports, but will keep your details confidential. The only time we will disclose your identity is if a problem can't be resolved and a case is brought to court.
