Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers
All premises which have cooling towers and evaporative condensers must register with us under The Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992.
This is to help us identify identify potential areas that could give rise to spread of infectious diseases, such as Legionnaire's Disease, and to ensure measures are taken to eliminate the risk of infection.
What are Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers?
They are types of cooling equipment, often used in manufacturing, that use water as part of the cooling process. The warm humid conditions can be an ideal breeding ground for micro-organisms such as the Legionella bacteria, which causes Legionnaire's disease.
What is Legionnaire's Disease?
It is a type of pneumonia with flu-like symptoms that must be treated with antibiotics; Legionnaire's disease is a serious, but uncommon illness. If you are diagnosed with this disease you should report it to your employer - they are required to notify the Health and Safety Executive of any cases of the disease which may have been acquired at work.
How can it be avoided?
Proper maintenance and cleaning of cooling systems such as evaporative condensers and cooling towers should reduce the chance of the bacteria building up and causing illness. We keep a register of these types of systems in our area and ensure that businesses take the necessary steps to keep them clean and safe. We also monitor cases of Legionnaire's disease to identify any trends and deal with potential outbreaks.
