Food Sampling
We carry out food sampling visits as part of a national programme of studies into the safety of raw and ready-to-eat foods.
We carry out the sampling in our area along with our own local studies, which are are particularly important as they can be adapted to take into account any local issues. Food samples and swabs of food contact surfaces are taken during these visits and sent for analysis by the Health Protection Agency.
The information we collect is fed back to the Food Standards Agency who use it to build a national picture of food quality and hygiene. The purpose of food surveillance studies is to protect public health and to develop ways of targeting specific food hygiene problems and investigate ways of monitoring and improvement.
We can also carry out visits to take food samples and swabs where we suspect there may be a source of food poisoning or poor hygiene/handling practices exist or to ensure that new food businesses are operating safely. You can find more details on our Food Safety Enforcement page.
