Health and Safety Officers and Investigations
We carry out regular checks on offices, shops, warehouses, places used for leisure activities and other non-industrial premises so make sure they are safe and not hazardous to people's health.
Inspections are carried out on a routine basis usually without notice and the high risk premises are visited more frequently.
During an inspection, we will need to be satisfied that any hazards to people's health, safety and welfare, been identified and the associated risks adequately controlled. We will look at the level of health and safety training of managers and staff to ensure that it is suitable. We will also check that the premises, equipment and working practices comply with Health and Safety Law.
Where practices or conditions are not satisfactory, every attempt will be made to resolve the situation by informal means, but where poor conditions persist, or where there is a serious and imminent risk to health and safety we may need to resort to formal action. This could involve the service of legal notices, prosecution, or in extreme cases closure of the business.
The Health and Safety Executive deal with factories and other industrial operations. This ensures that safe and healthy working conditions are provided for all employees, the self-employed and other persons affected by the work activity.
Topic Based Inspections
When we carry out a health and safety inspection we will focus on the following areas:
- Falls from height
- Workplace transport
- Manual handling
- Slips and trips
- Stress
By concentrating on the above topics we aim to reduce, as far as possible, the numbers of accidents and cases of ill health in the workplace.
Our officers will also expect the business to have identified and taken action on other risks associated with the business. Find out more on the Health and Safety Executive website.
Complaint Investigation
Complaints about working conditions are always investigated sensitively and confidentiality is assured. We will advise employers on the ways to improve or resolve problems, but as with any investigation, if formal action is needed then this will be taken.
Accident Investigation
The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrence Regulations mean that some work-related accidents, diseases and dangerous occurrences need to be reported.
As a result Environmental Health and Health and Safety Executive Officers have a duty to investigate accidents at work and dangerous occurrences. Depending on the findings of any accident investigation, action can range from giving advice to the employer to the more formal serving of notices and in extreme cases prosecution.
