Sunday Trading Act 1994
The Sunday Trading Act 1994 permits any shop to open for no longer than 6 continuous hours between the hours of 10am and 6pm, provided that the occupier of the shop has notified the local authority of their intentions.
Some shops are exempt from the 6 hour restriction including:
- Farm shops, motor and cycle supply shops, stands at exhibitions, airport and rail station shops, shops servicing ocean going ships and petrol/filling stations.
- Chemists/pharmacists that are open for the sale of medicines and surgical appliances are also exempt from these restrictions.
- Outlets which offer a service, such as hairdressers, restaurants and public houses are excluded from the restrictions on Sunday trading.
