Acupuncture, Electrolysis, Piercings and Tattooing
The Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 Part VIII requires that the following practices need to be registered with the Council:
- Acupuncture
- Tattooing
- Body Piercing
- Electrolysis
The Act requires registration to cover both the person and the premises. There are no powers to refuse registration, but the practice is controlled through compliance with bylaws in each individual case. The applicant must ensure that the procedures, equipment and facilities used for the above purposes comply fully with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
Once the application has been received and the fee of £75.00 for the premises, if not already registered, plus £75.00 per person has been paid, an Environmental Health Officer will make an inspection of the premises and check compliance with any local bylaw requirements, as well as ensuring Health and Safety requirements are met. The officer will be pleased to offer advice or give any help in meeting any obligations. An additional £75.00 is required for additional staff members.
It is illegal to conduct body piercing, tattooing, acupuncture or electrolysis until the registration has been formally approved.
