The Business Waste Directory and your duty of care
Disposing of all your types of waste can be complicated. For anything from office paper to clinical and construction waste, there are local contractors who can help you to dispose of it. To find contractors for your area visit the Business Waste Directory.
Set up independently and backed by DEFRA as a directory for all businesses, you can search via postcode for services in your area as well as by the material or materials you need to dispose of.

Duty of care
As a business, you have a legal ‘duty of care’ to ensure that any waste you produce is handled safely and within the law. This applies to anyone who produces, imports, transports, stores, treats or disposes of waste.
You must make sure your waste is stored properly before disposal so that it doesn’t leak or blow away and you must check that anyone you pass your waste on to is authorised to take it.
If you don’t check that they are authorised to take your waste and ensure it is legally disposed of, you could be held responsible.
People you could use to dispose of your waste include:
- Waste contractors
- Scrap metal merchants
- Recycling companies
- Local authorities
- Skip hire companies
The duty of care has no time limit. It extends until the waste has either been finally disposed of or fully recovered.
You must write a transfer note which includes a description of the waste. You must also keep records of all waste that you transfer or receive for at least two years.
Visit Netregs for more information and guidance on your duty of care.
