Greenhouse Gas (Carbon Emissions) Reporting

4,170 tonnes!  That is the weight of carbon emissions produced and emitted by North East Derbyshire District Council last year.  This is the same weight as 417 capsule pods from London’s Millennium Eye.

We have been asked to calculate our carbon emissions and produce a report to show the level of these emissions.  The report can be viewed by opening the PDF document attached to this webpage.  We have to report on greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. These are collectively known in the report as ‘carbon dioxide and equivalents’ or CO2e.

This is the first report by NEDDC and shows emissions from financial year 2008/09, 2009/10 and 2010/11.  A CO2e report will now be produced on an annual basis.  It states the emissions we've produced from gas and electric consumption, fleet vehicles and business mileage.

So, why do we need know this?  There are three main reasons:

1  To save money!

To find out how much carbon we emit then we need to know how much energy and fuel we are using, whether this is by checking our gas bills or taking note of how often we refuel our fleet vehicles.  Being more energy and fuel efficient helps us to use less of these necessities – and in turn saves money and reduces our emissions.  Use less energy, spend less money, emit less carbon!

2  If we don’t do it, we should not expect others to do it!

We encourage people to be as sustainable as they can – whether through recycling, planning guidelines or advising on reducing energy consumption.  The report helps us understand what emissions we produce and will help us to improve our approach to sustainability – so we hope it encourages others to do the same!

3  We report to the government!

NEDDC, like all other councils, have to report certain information to central government.  This includes emissions of carbon dioxide (and equivalent emissions). The report below explains where we send information.

We will use this report information to inform decisions around energy management, as the first step to reducing our carbon footprint is to measure it.  We are going to start monitoring even more resource use too, so we can begin to get an even clearer picture of what we are using and how we can improve.

If you want to work out your own household’s carbon footprint and get advice on how to reduce your spend on energy then have a look at DirectGov’s Carbon Calculator.  It is free, quick and simple to use and it may show you a way to save your own energy, emissions and money!
