Efficient heating systems

The ‘Magic Boiler’ scheme is available through the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Local Authorities Energy Partnership. You can buy condensing or condensing combi boilers for as little as £529.10 including VAT, and there could be a £30 cash back bonus after installation.

All boilers under the scheme are "A" rated and more than 90% efficient.  Worcester, Baxi, Potterton, Alpha, Ideal, Vokera, Ariston and Glow-Worm boiler models are available.

The Boiler Scrappage Scheme has now ended, however, there are some companies who are still offering rebates and cheaper priced boilers so it's worthwhile investigating if you are about to replace your old boiler.

Heating controls

Consider heating controls

Upgrade your heating controls to save up to 17 % on your heating bill.  Devices such as programmers, thermostats and radiator valves can be bought at a discount price through the scheme.

EU energy label

Use energy efficient appliances

When the time comes to buy new appliances such as washing machines, fridges or freezers make sure you look for one with the highest EU rating possible.  The EU Energy Ratings Label shows a sliding scale from A to G, with A being the most energy efficient and G being the lowest for most appliances.  Fridges and freezers can, however, be rated up to A+ and A++.  The rating each appliance has received will be highlighted on it's label.

By law, the EU energy label should be displayed on all fridges, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers, electric ovens and light bulb packages, so look out for it.   Choose the highest rating possible to save money on running costs - even if it is slightly more expensive to buy in the first place it will save money in the long run.

Look for the logo - the most energy efficient products will also have the Energy Saving Trust's logo on them.  This means that they have been thoroughly tested for energy efficiency and are recommended by the Energy Saving Trust.

Opt for a normal shower - some power showers can use lots of energy and as much water as a bath in around 10 minutes, so if you're putting in a new shower consider getting a standard flow one or fitting an aerating shower head which uses about 30 per cent less water and requires less energy to run.

lightbulbs

Low energy lightbulbs

Low energy light bulbs only use a quarter of the electricity of a normal bulb and last up to 10 times as long - they can save £60 each over their lifetime, so they are worth investing in.

Use them in areas where the light is on for the longest period in a day. Don’t use them in electronic sensors, dimmers and timers - check the manufacturer's instructions. There are now a wider selection of styles, shapes and fittings available, many more than a few years ago, so it's easy to find a bulb to suit your lighting needs!
