It's As Easy As Riding A Bike...
It's a skill you never forget. Why not dust off your old bike and go for a ride?
To bike or not to bike...
If you need any extra incentives to get on your bike here are a few ideas:
- It's a low cost travel option
- You can get different styles and types to suit your cycling needs
- Cycling improves your health and wellbeing
- It burns off calories and helps tone muscles
- It's a planet friendly activity
- You can ride through traffic jams!
- Cycle paths or "greenways" mean you can get around town quickly and safely
- There are no parking fees!
- It's an activity for all the family
Did you know - a bike travels around 373 miles on the energy equivalent of a litre of petrol
Ways to fit cycling into your life
- Cycle to work. Many workplaces now have cycle racks or bike pods to help you store your bike.
- If you prefer to cycle away from traffic then try one of the many parks of trails in the local area
- Try the Clay Cross and Ashover Circular Bike Ride
Through Cycle Derbyshire, Derbyshire County Council is working to open a network of 'greenways' all over the county. The network includes traffic-free pathways that connect Derbyshire's towns and villages to both dramatic and gentle countryside. The Derbyshire County Council website has a free downloadable cycling route map.
If you don't have a bike, why not hire one? The Peak District National Park Authority has cycle hire centres at Ashbourne, Derwent and Parsley Hay, each with a range of cycles and accessories to suit all sizes and ages.
A new pilot project in North East Derbyshire, Chesterfield and Bolsover Districts is helping people to get to work or training under their own steam. Bike to Work, operated through Wheels to Work Derbyshire Scheme, is able to loan a push bike or power assisted bike to anyone over the age of 16 that is having difficulty getting to work or college because of transport and is living in or trying to access a rural area.
