Planning - Disability Discrimination Act

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) means everyone who provides a service to the public must make reasonable adjustments to their premises so that disabled people can access the goods, services and facilities being offered.

Duties under the Goods and Services provisions of the DDA have been introduced gradually since the Act was introduced in 1995. Service providers already have a duty to:

  • Ensure that they do not treat disabled people less favourably for a reason related to their disability; and

  • To make reasonable adjustments to the way in which they provide the service and where necessary to provide auxiliary aids.

The DDA has also introduced duties in relation to employment, education, transport and in the way that property is managed and let.

Further information on the DDA can be found at:

Equality and Human Rights Commission - At the Disability Rights Commission we have one key goal: "A society where all disabled people can participate fully as equal citizens".
