Planning Tree Warden Scheme
The Council's Tree Warden Scheme, in partnership with National Grid Transco, is a national initiative launched in 1990 to enable people to play an active role in conserving and enhancing their local trees and woods.
The North East Derbyshire District Council Tree Warden Group was set up in 1997 and Tree Wardens are a voluntary position appointed by the Parish Council to gather information and encourage practical projects relating to trees and the community.
Tree Wardens play an important environmental role and their local knowledge is crucial in helping the Council protect trees and plant new saplings.
Tree Wardens do not need to be experts, just enthusiastic. Being a Tree Warden can often be combined with other activities, such as taking children to school, exercising the dog and family walks. Volunteers attend a number of free training sessions where they learn how to organise tree surveys and find out about tree law, biology and maintenance. There is also an annual East Midlands Tree Warden Forum where Tree Wardens from all over the region get together for a one day conference, and have the opportunity to compare experiences.
The duties of a Tree Warden include:
- Looking out for and notifying the Council of trees that have been damaged through vandalism or are suffering from disease.
- Keeping a look out for unauthorised development which threaten protected trees
- Working with schools to promote tree conservation
- Identifying sites for further planting
There are currently vacancies for Tree Wardens in the parishes of:
Barlow, Brackenfield, Brampton, Grassmoor Hasland and Winsick, Pilsley, Stretton, Sutton Cum Duckmanton, Temple Normanton, Unstone and Wessington
If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a Tree Warden please contact your local Parish Council or our Forward Plans team (details at bottom of page).
