In North East Derbyshire we want to create high quality, sustainable communities through our buildings, places and spaces. It is our role to create great communities for people to live and work.
In North East Derbyshire we will do just this with both commitment and passion.
The Urban Design Academy is a formal partnership between the council and Chesterfield College, and is supported by the Homes and Communities Academy, OPUN, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), Derbyshire Economic Partnership (DEP).
The aim of the Urban Design Academy is:
To provide North East Derbyshire District Councillors and staff with the understanding and knowledge to be able to passionately promote design Excellence for the district.
The Objectives of the academy are to:
- ensure that the council's policy of design Excellence is supported and promoted by our staff and members
- provide an accredited learning programme for professionals focussing on best practice for urban and landscape design
- develop the capacity of members to engage with the regeneration process and champion the cause of good urban design
- identify officer and member Urban design champions across services and associated with major developments
- work in partnership with agencies to develop the professional skills and understanding of council staff and members around design excellence.
The programme will include:
- a series of master classes
- site visits to other successful regeneration schemes
- establishing an urban design best practice group
- a skills audit identifying existing expertise and where there are gaps
- sharing best practice with our partners
- supporting staff to undertake specialist training
- reviewing major development schemes with a view to ensuring design excellence.
