How Do I Present My Bin?

You will be required to present your bin at the kerbside or at a previously notified collection point on your designated day of collection.

Please Assist Your Refuse Collection Service by:

  • Ensuring your bin is presented on your nominated collection day by not later than 7:00 am
  • Please ensure the lid is fully closed
  • Don’t over load the bin with heavy waste (i.e. soil, bricks or rubble)
  • Do not present side waste, it will not be collected
  • Park car(s) in a manner that will not obstruct our collection vehicle

What is the Flat Lid Policy?

Due to concern over health and safety and to help regulate the amount of waste being collected, the Council has introduced a “flat lid” policy which means your bin lid should be fully closed otherwise you will not receive a collection. In blustery conditions it is not uncommon for bin lids, ajar, to be blown in the faces of our Refuse Collectors, likewise, over spilling objects to fall on employees whilst the bin is being lifted.

What If I Forget to Put My Bin Out?

If you forget to bring your bin out you will miss your collection and it will not be collected until  the next scheduled collection day.  e.g. If you miss your black bin collection day, your black bin will not be emptied until the next scheduled black bin collection day 2 weeks later. In exceptional circumstances, we may consider a one off collection!

What if I Live in a Rural Area?

Residents of rural communities in isolated farms and houses currently being serviced by the small, one man operated collection vehicle, will be required to present their bins as near as possible or adjacent to the highway or nearest vehicular access.  In general this is the position where bins were collected from during the foot and mouth epidemic.

Why Has My Side Waste Not Been Collected?

It is not Council policy to take excess waste. You can dispose of this at the Household Civic Amenity Sites or contact the Council to arrange a bulky collection (please note there is a charge for this service). Remember to use all recycling facilities available to minimise your waste.

How Do I Dispose of Items Too Big to Fit In My Household Bin?

You may take large items of waste that will not fit in to your household bin to your household Civic Amenity Site at Stonegravels, Chesterfield. Alternatively you can request the Council to provide you with a bulk collection go to the Bulky Collections page for more details.

For full details on Civic Amenity Sites please go to the Derbyshire County Council website.

Why Has My Bin Not Been Emptied?

  • Has your normal collection day been affected by a Bank Holiday?
After Bank Holidays, bins are emptied a day later than normal.
Special arrangements are made for the period over the Christmas period.

  • What time did you put your bin out?
If this was after 7:00am it may have been presented too late. The lorry may have had to come earlier than usual due to, for example a road closure. All bins should be presented for 7:00am to ensure collection.

  • Was there anything heavy in it?
If so, it may have been too heavy to lift and items will need removing. If the bin was overloaded and heavy your bin will not be emptied until the next scheduled collection day. You will need to dispose of any excess waste at a Household Civic Amenity Site. Heavy bins can fall off the lifters and cause a serious injury to passers by or to the Refuse Collectors themselves. Heavy bins can also damage the lifting mechanism on the lorry.

  • Prevented access
Were there any vehicles parked on the street in a manner that prevented access to our collection crew. Remember our collection vehicle is a 6 wheel Large Goods Vehicle 26 tonnes (GVW) which needs adequate space for manoevering

Will My Bin Be Emptied On A Bank Holiday?

Your bin will not be emptied on the actual bank holiday but will be collected on an alternative day, usually the day after your normal collection day.  Each year you will be given a leaflet showing details of the changes to collections at bank holiday times - a copy is available to download below.

Can I Have a Replacement Bin?

  • If your bin has been damaged by our collection vehicle and cannot be repaired we will provide you with a new one free of charge

  • If it has been stolen we can deliver a new one, however you will be charged for the new bin. As this is theft, this should also be reported to the police immediately.

What Happens If I’m not Able to Present My Own Bin?

If there is no one in your household who is able to take the wheeled bin to the kerbside then you may qualify for the Assisted Collection Service. The crew will then collect and/or return your wheeled bin from your property. This is only granted if there is no other able bodied person available to regularly take the bin to the kerbside. A temporary assistance service may also be available to cover short-term incapacity.

What Happens If I Move To A House With No Bin?

Contact the Council once you know when you will be moving into your new house.  We will not deliver a wheeled bin to an empty property. You will be contacted and an appointment will be made for the delivery of your bin. Please paint your number on your  bin as soon as it is possible.

What Happens If I Have a Large Family?

If there are 6 or more permanent residents in your household you may qualify to receive an extra bin (140 litre). For further details please go to the Extra Refuse Bins page.

You do need to be actively recycling as well - find out more about recycling services.

Waste left by contractors

This Council will not collect any waste created on household premises by builders, plumbers, decorators, gardeners, electricians, joiners, odd-job men, glaziers, double-glazing installers, central-heating installers, fitted kitchen installers or any other tradesmen.

All contractors should remove the waste they produce when carrying out any work on your property. They are legally obliged to do this under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. You could also be guilty of an offence by causing them to evade their legal duty and not dispose of their ‘commercial waste’.
Under the Household Waste Duty of Care Regulations 2005, householders are required to check that the tradesmen is a registered waste carrier who will dispose of the the waste generated at a registered site. This is to help prevent "tradesmen" fly tipping waste, as under the new legislation, householders can be liable for a £5,000 fine for failing to check the tradesmen's waste carriers registration document.

How do I remove waste that the council do not collect?

Householders who wish to remove large amounts of waste, or waste that does not fall within the definition of ‘household waste’, should look for registered waste contractors in the Yellow Pages under such headings as ‘Skip Hire’ or ‘House Clearance’, or in the local newspapers.

Householders are reminded that they should ensure their waste is disposed of in a proper manner and to a licensed waste disposal site. Fly tipping is illegal and irresponsible. It is an offence under Section 33(a) of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to deposit waste on any land other than that which is controlled by a waste management licence. On summary conviction this offence can carry a fine of up to £50,000 and/or twelve months imprisonment.
