Bulk Collections

Bulky Household Waste Collection Service

The Council offers a service for the removal of bulky items from outside your home. This is known as the Bulky Domestic Waste Collection Service. The service has been created to help people who cannot take the larger items of furniture, household and garden equipment to their local  Civic Amenity Site.

If you require a house clearance we suggest you use a private company that provides this service at a competitive price rather than the Council's specialist service. You can find companies who do this in Yellow Pages or online – try under House Clearance.

Requirements and additional information

What do I need to consider when arranging a bulky collection?

  • If you are requesting the removal of furniture, could these items be of use to someone else?
  • We need an exact description of the items and quantities. Only items listed will be collected
  • Small items must be contained within sacks or boxes so far as is reasonably possible
  • We will normally pick up items from outside your house, any time after 7.00am
  • All items are should be suitably tied or bundled if appropriate
  • Fridge and freezer doors should be taped up
  • Fridges and freezers should be completely emptied of food
  • Carpets must be rolled and tied or cut into pieces if two people cannot carry the carpet
  • Items should not be filled with other rubbish
  • Items are placed outside, preferably at the property curtilage, on the day of collection

The prices quoted previously are for items left outside the property. We will not enter garages or houses to collect items. However if you are unable to present items outside we can provide you with a quotation for removal.

When making a request for a bulky domestic collection, we need the following details:

  • Your name, address and postcode
  • The address for the collection (with directions/landmarks if not easily found)
  • Your daytime contact telephone number
  • An exact list of items to be collected and their location (e.g. side, front or back of property)
  • A full list of the items to be collected must be given at the time of making the request.  Additional items cannot be added to a request once made.

What Constitutes an Item?

Items of waste come in all shapes, sizes and weights. This ultimately affects the way items are handled by our collection crews. In general one item is defined as follows:

  • Armchair, bed base, carpet, chest of drawers, cooker, dining chair, dressing table, mattress, microwave, settee, sideboard, table, television, wardrobe, washing machine.

  • Two, three-quarters full standard refuse sacks are equal to one item (Do not overfill sacks)

Are Fridges and Freezers Collected?

Fridge and freezers are collected and taken to a centre that arranges from them to be properly recycled. This is because they contain hazardous coolant gases known as CFCs and HFCs. The gases are extremely harmful to the atmosphere and need to be disposed of in a safe manner.  Each fridge/freezer collected will be charged at £10.00 per unit e.g. 1 fridge and 1 freezer will be £20.00 (less 50% if on any benefits at all)

Is Electronic and Electrical Equipment Recycled?

New legislation requires all electrical and electronic equipment to be collected and disposed of in to a registered recycling centre. The Council is currently incorporating these requirements in to its collection arrangements ahead of the legislative start date. Equipment collected is taken to a recycling centre.

From 1st July 2007 the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations (WEEE) came in to force.  This requires manufacturers and retailers to be responsible for WEEE recycling and develop "Take Back" schemes in order to comply with their producer responsibility requirements to recycle EEE waste.  Ask the retailer for details of free "Take Back" schemes for old cookers, washers, fridges, freezers and other EEE waste.

Is There A Furniture Recycling Network?

Alternatively if items you wish to dispose of are in good condition and flame retardant (for upholstered items) then you may wish to consider either giving the item away through the local classifieds, or passing them on to one of many charitable organisations who in turn may be able to re-home the items with families on low incomes.

Freecycle Network

The Freecycle Network is open to all individuals who want to "recycle" that special something rather than throw it away. Whether it's a chair, a fax machine, piano or an old door.
