Extra Refuse Capacity
Extra Refuse Bin Applications
If you think your bin is not big enough for your needs and want to apply for a extra capacity (a bigger bin or an extra bin), please read the following information:
Household Size
Households of six or more permanent residents can receive extra refuse capacity, as long as they meet all other relevant conditions (see below). We will need to see evidence of the number of residents in your household.
You can also apply if there are other exceptional circumstances that lead to you producing a higher level of waste than normal. We will consider each case individually, but would expect that you make every reasonable effort to reduce the amount of waste you produce as much as possible.
Recycling
You must recycle as much as possible. Paper, glass bottles, jars, clean food and drink cans can all be recycled through the Blue Box and Blue Bag scheme. Recycling sites are also available across the District for the recycling of these items as well as plastics and drinks cartons.
Households who don't recycle will not be issued with extra bin capacity, and we may withdraw the extra bin capacity if you fail to recycle; your black/grey bin is not intended for disposal of items that can be recycled.
If you do not have a Blue Box or Blue Bag you should contact the Clean and Green Line on the number below to request one.
Reducing Your Waste
You can reduce the volume of your waste by flattening or squashing items before putting them into your bin. Remember that flattened cardboard and garden prunings should go into your green bin and the Household Waste Recycling Centre is the best place to get rid or larger items that can't be recycled. We need to be sure that you are doing what you can to reduce the amount of waste going into your bin.
Circumstances of Household Occupants
If your household produces a large amount of medical waste (due to disability or other similar causes) this will support your application for extra bin capacity. We will still consider the other factors above when making our decision.
Charges
There is a one-off charge of £20 (£10 if on benefits).
We will send a review form every 2 years to check that your household still needs the extra capacity.
