Extra Refuse Capacity
Extra Refuse Bin Applications
If you are considering applying for extra bin capacity because you feel your current bin is not large enough for your needs, you should read the following.
Requesting An Extra Bin
If you would like to apply for extra bin capacity please contact our Clean and Green Line (details at bottom of page).
Alternatively you can complete the extra bin capacity application form found at the bottom of this page. Once complete please send it to: Streetscene, North East Derbyshire District Council, Council House, Saltergate, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, S40 1LF.
Household Family Size
The Council’s policy allows households of six or more permanent residents to receive extra refuse capacity, subject to the household meeting all other relevant conditions (as set out below). Evidence of the number of residents is required.
However, you can also apply if there are other exceptional circumstances that lead to you producing a higher level of waste than would normally be the case. The Council will consider each such case on its merits, but would expect that residents make every reasonable effort to keep the amount of waste they produce to a minimum.
Use of Recycling Facilities
When the Council assesses any application for extra bin capacity, we will confirm what recycling facilities are available to that household. Kerbside collections (of paper, food and drinks cans, glass bottles and cans, and textiles) are available to the vast majority of households.
Households who do not recycle would not be issued with extra bin capacity, and the Council reserves the right to withdraw the extra bin capacity from households who fail to recycle. The general refuse bin is not intended for disposal of items that can be recycled, and households must recycle using the facilities available to them.
If you do not have a Blue Box or Blue Bag you should contact the Clean and Green Line on the number below to request one.
Reasonable Attempts to Minimise Waste
The Council would expect households to make reasonable efforts to minimise waste. This would include flattening items such as plastic bottles or cardboard boxes to take up less space in order to make a reasonable attempt to fit all waste in the normal size of bin provided. The Council has a responsibility to keep its service costs as low as possible for all residents, and is therefore not in a position to provide greater capacity to individual households unless there are special reasons for doing so.
Circumstances of Household Occupants
If the household produces a significant amount of medical waste due to disability or other similar factors resulting in an unavoidably larger amount of waste than would normally be the case, this will support your application for extra bin capacity. The Council will still consider the other factors above when making its decision.
Charge
There is a one-off charge of £20 (£10 if on benefits) for the extra bin capacity.
We will send review forms out to successful applicants every 2 years to check the houshold still meets the necessary criteria.
