Derbyshire care services directory

We compile a directory to assist people who are considering entering a care home in Derbyshire.

The homes featured in this directory are either owned by ourselves, private sector proprietors, or voluntary sector organisations. All care homes are registered by the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) to ensure they comply with national minimum standards.

The need for care often arises when least expected. As a result, many older people or their relatives, are faced with financial and legal problems and the need to make decisions on matters of which they may have very little understanding.

Many older people find that their capital, often their life savings or the proceeds from a former property, will not yield sufficient income to meet high care costs. They find their money runs out long before their need for care ceases. With that loss often goes the independence, dignity and right of choice they deserve at perhaps the most vulnerable time of their life.

It is therefore of paramount importance to seek specialist advice on meeting the cost of care. When assessing an individual’s needs, consideration should be given to which investments or care fee plans would be most suitable to meet care costs. Look at entitlement to local and health authority support and Department for Work and Pensions benefits. Consider tax implications and seek guidance on important legal matters.

The most appropriate financial products to meet care costs will depend on individual circumstances.

Health, age, life expectancy, cost of care, fee increases, capital and income available and entitlement to State support should all be considered.

The aim being to enable older people to meet their care costs for life whilst, as far as possible, preserving their original capital, independence and the ability to leave an inheritance, should they wish to do so.

When choosing a care home, it is important to make sure that the fees are affordable, not only immediately, but also over the long term. The consequences of perhaps having to move to alternative accommodation because of inadequate financial planning could be extremely distressing.
