Independent Living Service (previously the Wardens Service and Care Call)
Independent Living Service (formerly Warden Service and Care Call Alarm System) are available for everyone, whether they rent or live in their own home, and is managed by Rykneld Homes.
The Independent Living Service is a support service designed to help people continue to live independently. It is designed to meet your personal needs, rather than being based on the property you live in.
Our Independent Living Officers will work with you to help you access the support you need. They will act as the key person between you and a range of services that you need to access to promote independence, develop your self confidence and maximise your enjoyment of life.
The service covers a range of issues including:
• Individual assessments and completion of a support plan
• Security, health and safety
• Safeguarding and protection from abuse
• Encouraging community engagement, involvement and empowerment
• Identifying early intervention and prevention
• Enabling access to a range of services
• Encouraging individual choice and control

Individual support plans will be reviewed each year. If your circumstances change, for example, if you have to spend time in hospital, the officer will visit you and update your support plan. This makes sure that you receive the help and support that you need, from the right organisations.
Supporting independent living
Your support plan will also help you to carry tasks at home which you may find difficult; making appointments, help with correspondence or getting out and about in the community, for example.
We can also give advice and assistance if you're thinking of moving home. You may need to move to a property that has adaptations, for example, and we will help you consider what type of properties would be suitable or the type of adaptations that will help you continue to live independently. We can also give advice on what needs to be done during the actual move itself.
Care Call Alarm System
Many council homes occupied by elderly or disabled people are linked by a Care Call alarm system to a central control point, which is staffed 24 hours-a-day throughout the year.
Residents are able to speak to an operator to get help in an emergency. The operator will already have your details held on the computer and will be able to summon help from your next of kin, doctor, ambulance, police, fire service or social care.
