The government-run Planning Portal provides you with information and guidance about the planning process for businesses and professionals who represent them. It is a good place to look before you decide whether you need to put in a planning application.
We offer a pre-application service for businesses which ensures that your application will be dealt with by a dedicated planning officer, who will be able to guide you through the pre-application process and provide support when you need it.
In making your application you will need to submit the following information:
- A location plan *
- A site layout plan *
- Drawings (these will not normally be needed in the case of outline applications)
- Design and Access statements
You should also note that the design of all new development is a material consideration in determining planning applications. * See how you can Buy a Plan online to support your application on the Planning Portal website.
You or your agent may also require additional information about planning policies that could affect your application. All local authorities are required to produce a Local Plan with the aim of providing a more flexible planning system that adapts to changing priorities and which seeks to secure sustainable development. It is shaped by the National Planning Policy Framework.

Details of all planning applications are held in our Online Planning System where you can find and comment on planning applications that are being considered near you. You can search for applications by property, application reference and even using a map. You can also track an application as it goes through the planning process.
Please note that you must register with us if you want to comment online or track an application.
Urban Design Academy Open or Close
The Urban Design Academy started as a North East Derbyshire District Council initiative. It was a formal partnership between the Council and Chesterfield College, with support from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), OPUN, CABE, Derbyshire Economic Partnership and emda. The aim was to provide Councillors and Council staff with the understanding, skills and knowledge to be able to passionately promote design excellence for North East Derbyshire.
The success of the Urban Design Academy in meeting this aim, led to the decision that it should become a Community Interest Company (CIC). It is felt that this type of organisation model will enable it to flourish and provide the most benefit to the area in the long term.
The Urban Design Academy CIC will have a dual role. It will act as a champion for good urban design within Derbyshire. It will also provide an enabling role for the dissemination of knowledge and training on urban design matters to a range of relevant organisations.
To learn more about the aims and objectives of the Urban Design Academy CIC, please download the Business Plan.
On 30th September 2016 the Urban Design Academy held its first event – “Urban Design – it’s not just for cities!” at the Council Offices. The event included presentations from nationally recognised urban design experts and was attended by a number of staff from local stakeholders.
