14th August 2017Council and Police revving up to deal with nuisance bikes Open or Close
Nuisance motorcycles and quads are continuing to cause problems across North East Derbyshire District.
Residents have become increasingly frustrated and angry at some of the irresponsible antics of those riding these machines in and around neighbourhoods and causing damage to trails, paths and open spaces such as children’s parks and sports fields.
And together with the Police, we have vowed to target these individuals, via organised initiatives which include focusing on known hot spot areas and bringing the culprits to justice.
Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Councillor Jeff Lilley said, “We receive reports about pit bikes, scooters and quads plus mini motos being ridden at high speeds in places where they are a real threat to the public. The irresponsible antics of some riders and their disregard for the safety of the public, and themselves has to be stopped.”
The machines can often un-roadworthy, have no license plates or are being ridden by people not wearing a helmet.
Councillor Lilley added, “Our aim has to be to protect members of the public and combat the problems sensibly, but what we need is for people to inform us and give us names and addresses of those responsible so we can act and take action.”
Sgt James Shirley from Derbyshire Police is urging members of the public to put forward names of possible culprits. He added, “These people will then be visited and given advice, followed by any appropriate warnings. This is a community problem and the solution lies in a joined up public, council and police response."

The Government want to know more about the experiences that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people have living in the UK.
They have produced a survey that asks about:
- your experiences of accessing and using public services in the UK
- any experiences of discrimination you may have faced throughout your life
You will be asked about your experiences at work, in education, in healthcare, and about your personal safety. We want to collect as much information as possible, but you don’t have to answer every question if you don’t want to. The survey is anonymous: no one will be able to tell who you are at any point.
24th July 2017Brass Band Festival comes to Dronfield Open or Close
Talented musicians will once again raise the roof when we stage our annual Brass Band Festival.
Dronfield Sports Centre is the venue for the 59th event, which will see Dronfield (Genquip) Band, Shirebrook Miners Welfare (Unison) Band and Stannington Brass Band competing for the coveted T.H Hallworth Challenge Trophy and a top cash prize.
Money raised on the night from the sale of plants and raffle tickets will go to our Chair’s Appeal in aid of the Derbyshire Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse Service and Sheffield Hospitals Charity the Spinal Cord Injury Centre.
Councillor Rosie Smith, Council Chair said: “This promises to be a great night of music and entertainment. I hope to see as many people as possible in attendance, enjoying themselves and helping me raise money for my two charities.”
Tickets are on sale now for the festival, which will take place on Saturday 23 September 2017. The event starts at 7.30pm, with doors opening at 6.30pm. Admission is £5 or £4 for senior citizens.

17th July 2017Sporting stars set to be recognised Open or Close
The search is on to find the stars and unsung heroes of the sporting world from across North East Derbyshire.
We are once again on the lookout for dedicated local sports people and their sporting successes from the past 12 months, so they can be recognised at our annual awards ceremony.
The North East Derbyshire District Council Annual Sports Awards help to recognise and celebrate the success of those involved in sport at all levels within the District.
There are 13 categories up for- grabs, including: Lifetime Achievement Award, Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, Disabled Sportsperson of the Year and Team of the Year.
Winners of the individual performer categories will receive a free annual membership to our leisure facilities to help with their training programme. All winners will also be put forward to be judged for the Derby Telegraph Sports Awards.
Each category has qualifying criteria and must be based upon performances from September 2016 to August 2017. Nominations can be received from any individual, club or team involved in schools or sports organisations within North East Derbyshire district and the nominee must be involved in a sport recognised by Sport England and must be submitted by the deadline of Friday 8 September 2017.

7th July 2017Barking Mad Open or Close
Four noisy dogs have cost their owner over £584 in court fees after they caused a neighbourhood nuisance by continually barking.
We received complaints about dogs continuously barking at the property of Brenda Green (52) of Thirlmere Drive, Dronfield. We served her with an abatement notice requesting that the noise stop and be dealt with, but Green failed to act on this.
Further investigations by us found that Green’s four dogs - a Staffy cross Collie, a Jack Russell, a Staffy cross Alsatian and an American Bulldog – were still continually barking, sometimes for up to four hours at all times of the day and night.
Green, who failed to appear at North East Derbyshire and Dales Magistrates Court in Chesterfield was found guilty under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and was handed a fine of £440 plus £100 costs and £44 victim surcharge, totaling £584.
Member with responsibility for the Environment, Councillor Michael Gordon said, “The noise caused by these dogs caused a great deal of disruption and distress to the local residents and neighbourhood. The owner had been warned on several occasions about the noise and the consequences of not complying with the abatement notice.
"This is a clear message we want to send to people that noise nuisances of any nature will not be tolerated.”

27th June 2017Dronfield named Safest Place in East Midlands Open or Close
Dronfield has been named the ‘Safest Place in the East Midlands’ following a recent study.
The study, undertaken by Value Penguin, was based on a variety of crime metrics sourced from police.uk via UKCrimeStats across 44 East Midland post towns.
Dronfield received a score of 593 which considered both violent crime and property crime and was adjusted for population size. The town was ranked as:
- 1st - Small Town Safety Rank
- 1st - Overall Safety Rank
- 1st - Violent Crime
- 2nd - Property Crime
The postal towns with populations of at least 1,000 were included in the regional study and crime scores ranged from 593 to 3,891 (where a lower score indicates less crime).
Dronfield has a population close to 25,000 and has the lowest violent crime rate for a post town of its size (population 20,000 to 50,000) in all of England and Wales. The most recent policing priorities involve ticketing vehicles parked in white zig zag lines near schools and carrying out speed checks near schools and problem areas.
Council Leader and councillor for Dronfield North, Graham Baxter MBE said, “We are delighted to receive this accolade. Dronfield is a lovely town with lovely people and we have worked hard to make sure it is a safe place to live, work and play.
“It’s a tight knit community, where people know each other, say hello walking down the street and look out for each other. We’ve got some great amenities in the town, such as parks, train station and leisure facility, and I feel all this added together has contrinbuted to us receiving this title.”
The North East Derbyshire Community Safety Partntership have worked hard with partners to reduce crime in the area which included:
- targeted and specific crime prevention work in areas where people have suffered from crime,
- staged cracking crime events to help educate people,
- spoke directly to local residents about any concerns they may have,
- undertook a burglar alarm project and provided free burglar alarms to people in areas that were deemed as needing one, and
- staged diversionary activities for young people by providing activities such as Extreme Wheels Roadshows.
Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Councillor Jeff Lilley said, “To be ranked first in three out of the four categories is a great achievement. I think people do feel safe here as over the years we’ve worked with our partners to tackle problems head on as they occur.
“You can see that our targeted approach to tackling problem areas and hot spots has helped reduce both minor and serious crime offences and we will continue to work closely with our partners to make sure we provide a safe and pleasant community for the town’s residents.”

The Sheffield City Region Combined Authority has an Audit Committee to promote excellence in governance and financial reporting.
The Committee currently has a vacancy for one or more Independent Members, and is seeking people with the necessary skills, enthusiasm and commitment to be a member of the Committee and to bring a fresh external perspective to its work.
The purpose of the Committee is to provide independent assurance of the effectiveness of:
- the governance arrangements of the Authority
- the Authority’s risk management framework
- the Authority’s financial management processes and the way this relates to the performance of services
The Committee meets four times a year although additional meetings may be called if there is urgent business to be considered. The successful applicant will need knowledge, skills and expertise of the public sector in respect of finance, audit and wider corporate governance.

7th June 2017Take action on National Clean Air Day Open or Close
On Thursday 15 June, the first ever National Clean Air Day (NCAD) will see local schools, hospitals, workplaces and communities across UK cities run events, and inspire local residents to act for
their own health and the health of local children.
The health impact or air pollution, equivalent to 40,000 premature deaths every year in the UK, is completely unnecessary and NCAD is all about giving everyone the tools and inspiration to reduce pollution now.
We are supporting the day raising awareness with our employees through facts and stories as well as highlighted the importance of clean air vi our social media platforms.
Everybody can have a positive impact on air quality and we would like to inspire staff/residents/employees/customers to understand the actions they can take to reduce air pollution, and limit its impact on their health and the health of others.
You can help by sharing a car to work, walk/take public transport to the shops, don't use your log burner until absolutely necessary or simply by switching off your engine whilst stationary.
Thursday 15 June will be a day of practical action, myth-busting and awareness-raising, so we can all breathe cleaner air. NCAD gives every school, hospital, workplace and housing estate free access to cutting-edge advice on avoiding and tackling urban air pollution, approved by health experts and academics.

19th May 2017Council's new Chair unveiled Open or Close
Councillor Rosie Smith has been elected as the youngest ever Chair of North East Derbyshire District Council. Cllr Smith (27), who represents Unstone Ward, was Vice Chair of the council for 2016/17. She took up her new role as Chair at NEDDC’s annual council meeting on Monday 15 May. As part of her role as Chair, she will be raising money for two charitable causes – Derbyshire Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse Service and Sheffield Hospitals Charity the Spinal Cord Injury Centre.
Cllr Smith, whose consort will be her sister Caroline, said: “It’s a great honour to be elected as Chair of the council and a role I’m greatly looking forward to. “I’m also hoping to raise as much money and awareness as I can for my chosen charities during my year in office.”
Cllr Smith has chosen to raise money for Derbyshire Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse Service because of the valuable work they do helping vulnerable women, men and children in our area. Derbyshire Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse Service is a specialist and experienced provider of domestic abuse services. Its primary purpose is to support all victims of domestic abuse in the local area. It was established in 1985 when it opened its first refuge.
While Sheffield Hospitals Charity the Spinal Cord Injury Centre was chosen after Cllr Smith’s best friend suffered a spinal injury following a car accident and spent eight months in the centre. The Spinal Cord Injury Centre, based at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital, treats patients who have injured their spinal cord and is the second largest specialist centre in the country.
Each year over 8,500 patients visit the centre from across Derbyshire, Sheffield and South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. A number of events will now take place over the coming months to raise money for the two charities.

18th May 2017Council's take lead with dog roadshow Open or Close
Dog owners across Bolsover District and North East Derbyshire District are being given the chance to have free wellbeing checks and urged to get their dog microchipped for free as part of a popular mobile pet checking unit which is touring the area in June.
We have joined forces with North East Derbyshire District Council to bring the PDSA Health Check Roadshow to the area from 13-16 June 2017.
The free wellbeing checks – which include weight, eyes, teeth, ears, coat condition and general fitness - are undertaken by an experienced veterinary nurse, who will also be able to provide information on the care of other popular pets. Dog owners who have puppies older than eight-weeks are also encouraged to bring it in for their first wellbeing check.
Our Dog Warden will also be on hand to provide free dog microchipping - something which normally costs around £15 – and is a legal requirement for all dogs.
Cabinet Member with responsibility for the Environment, Councillor Michael Gordon said, “Owning a dog is a rewarding experience, but it is also a big responsibility and can often come with hefty bills. So we are urging as many dog owners as possible to visit the PDSA PetCheck vehicle to find out more about their dog’s health and take advantage of a free dog health MOT!”
We have been running the roadshows for a number of years now and an average of 200 dogs receive free microchips and 120 receive free pet health checks during the course of the event.
We will also be offering advice about canine behaviour and responsible dog ownership – as well as handing out free poop scoop bags at each of the roadshow events.
Bolsover District Council's Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor Brian Murray-Carr, said “We are delighted that the Health Check roadshow will be coming to our part of the country again. They have been very popular in the past and provide not only dog owners with a valuable free service, but also give us the chance to talk to them about any concerns they have and any new initiatives we are bringing in.”

4th May 2017Vandals target Eckington play area Open or Close
An Eckington play area has been targeted by mindless vandals who have caused in excess of £600 worth of damage to the facility.
During recent routine inspections by our staff to the Ash Crescent play area, damage was found to have been caused to safety chains and a basket swing which have rendered the basket swing out of order. It appeared someone had taken an angle grinder to the safety chain, and bolts and links had been removed from and bent on the basket swing. A discarded needle was also found at the foot of the basket swing.
Council Leader, Councillor Graham Baxter MBE said, “This is just mindless vandalism. We only have a certain amount of money to replace and repair equipment each year and once it has been spent, we will have no alternative but to temporarily close the recreation facilities if they are deemed unsafe.
“For this level of damage to be done, the culprits must be taking equipment onto the play area with the sole intention of causing damage and potentially causing harm to children. We would urge people to contact us straight away if they see anything.
“The actions of a few idiots are just spoiling it for the rest of the community who do take care of and enjoy the facilities we provide."
The Ash Crescent play equipment is owned by Eckington Parish Council and we inspect every play facility under our management once a month to check for faults or repairs and ensure the facilities are safe for people to use. These are checked to European Playground Standard EN1176 and EN1177.

18th April 2017Local businesses urged to ‘Meet the Buyer’ for The Avenue development Open or Close
Local businesses and trades people are being invited to be part of the first phase of development on North East Derbyshire District Council’s national flagship regeneration scheme ‘The Avenue’.
The 98 hectare site off Mill Lane – which once housed coking works – has been cleaned-up ready for redevelopment in a joint project involving ourselves and Derbyshire County Council. After 15 years of remediation and preparation for development, new multi user trails are being prepared and 7,000 trees have been planted to create an impressive green infrastructure to compliment future housing schemes.
And now Kier Living, which has been contracted by the Homes and Communities Agency to build the first 260 homes at The Avenue, is looking for contractors to work on site with an anticipated start date of September 2017. And we, together with Derbyshire County Council are keen to ensure that local businesses and trades people have access to the contracts that will be available and have therefore organised a 'Meet the Buyer' event.

11th April 2017North East Derbyshire residents: have your say on new ward boundaries Open or Close
The independent Local Government Boundary Commission for England is asking people across North East Derbyshire to comment on its draft proposals for new council ward boundaries.
A 10-week public consultation on the recommendations begins today and will end on 19 June 2017. The consultation is open to anyone who wants to have their say on new council wards, ward boundaries and ward names across North East Derbyshire.
The Commission’s draft recommendations propose that North East Derbyshire should have 53 councillors in the future, the same as the current arrangements. The recommendations also outline how those councillors should represent ten three-councillor wards, nine two-councillor wards and five one-councillor wards across the district.
The full recommendations and detailed interactive maps are available on the Commission’s website. Hard copies of the Commission’s report and maps will also be available to view at council buildings.
At the same time, the Commission is consulting on a new pattern of wards for neighbouring Bolsover District Council.
Professor Colin Mellors, Chair of the Commission, said: “We are publishing proposals for a new pattern of wards across North East Derbyshire and we are keen to hear what local people think of the recommendations. Over the next ten weeks, we are asking local people to tell us if they agree with the proposals or if not, how they can be improved.
“Our review aims to deliver electoral equality for local voters. This means that each councillor represents a similar number of people so that everyone’s vote in council elections is worth roughly the same regardless of where you live.
“We also want to ensure that our proposals reflect the interests and identities of local communities across North East Derbyshire and that the pattern of wards can help the council deliver effective local government to local people.
“We will consider all the submissions we receive whoever they are from and whether your evidence applies to the whole district or just part of it.”

We are delighted to say that Eckington Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre will be fully open from 8am on Saturday 25 March 2017.
The refurbished facilities include an extended 50+ station gym, a new group exercise studio, soft play area, cafe and new ‘village’ change’ facilities, plus our 25m swimming pool which will incorporate public swim, inflatable fun sessions and swimming lessons. Our opening hours have also been extended to provide you with more opportunities to get fit and stay healthy. Could you help us raise cash for our Chair’s Appeal in aid of the Weston Park Cancer Charity?
We’re holding a Rowathon on Thursday 6 April at our District Council Offices, Mill Lane, Wingerworth, and our three sports centres – Dronfield Sports Centre, Eckington Swimming Pool and Sharley Park Leisure Centre, Clay Cross - to raise cash for the charity.
Cllr Stephen Peters, Chair of North East Derbyshire District Council, said: “As my year as Chair draws to an end, it would be great to give my charity appeal one final push. I’d love to see as many people as possible sign up to the event, or sponsor someone they know to take part.”
Council staff will also be taking part in the challenge, which will run for a mammoth 12 hours (9am-9pm) at our leisure centres and during normal business hours (9am-5pm) at Mill Lane.

21st February 2017Stonebroom man accused of stalking Open or Close
A 22-year old man from Stonebroom who has been accused of stalking and making threats to life has received an interim injunction.
For the past 4-years, Corey Bryan of Shelley Grove, Stonebroom has engaged in stalking behaviour where he hacked into the victims email and Facebook account, changed passwords and made defamatory comments about the victim and their family.
He also hacked into the Facebook accounts of the victims friends, persistently called the victims landline (upwards of 200 times in a 2 hour period), followed them on occasions and indicated what they were doing and where they where, to unnerve them.
Our Community Safety Parrnership had been working closely with the Police on this issue and Bryan was arrested and cautioned in December 2016. A warning letter was issued to his parents, but despite this he carried on indirectly getting into the victims Facebook account.
On 8 February an interim injunction was issued that stated Bryan was :
- Not to use threatening, abusive or intimidating language or conduct that is likely to cause harassment, alarm and distress to the victim, and
- Not to contact the victim (including but not limited to electronic devises) either directly or indirectly.
The Judge also granted a power of arrest to be attached to this injunction due to the severity of the case and the suffering that the victim had gone through.
This is due for review by the courts in April 2017. Bryan’s parents were also served with a NOP (Notice to seek possession) due to the fact he resides there and they cannot control his behaviour.

21st February 2017Residents urged to have their say on draft Local Plan Open or Close
Local residents and businesses from across North East Derbyshire District are being invited to have their say on our emerging Local Plan and how they want to see the area grow and develop up until 2033.
Councillors have agreed the general contents of the Consultative Draft Local Plan and supported the proposal to undertake a six-week consultation period in relation to it, which starts on Friday 24 February until Friday 7 April 2017.
The Plan sets out the overarching vision and objectives that will guide the development of the District together with our Spatial Strategy for where development should go. The strategy emphasises the importance of sustainable development, and balancing social, economic and environmental implications.
The draft document contains proposed allocations for large housing and employment sites. It also includes policies on a broad range of topics designed to deliver the growth the District needs whilst protecting the historic and environmental assets people value.
The key matters/options have been developed based on current guidance, the evidence we have collected and what people told us during previous consultation.
Cabinet Member with responsibility for the environment, Councillor Michael Gordon said, “A lot of hard work has gone into producing this document which must be in line with Government requirements and at the same time meet the needs of local people.
“We have a duty to ensure that enough land is identified to support growth and meet the development needs of the District in a sustainable way. The Local Plan will essentially be the blueprint for what development will take place across our District in the next fifteen years, so it is important that people come along, talk to us and have their say.
“The Local Plan Strategy sets out an ambitious, but deliverable plan to help develop a strong economic base whilst at the same time enhancing the District as a place to live, work and play.
“The plan is to create towns where people can walk or cycle to work, shop locally, where they offer a better balance between employment and housing and offer a more sustainable future for our local residents.”The draft Local Plan contains four strategic sites which are seen as areas that will deliver significant and substantial growth during the plan period.

- Former Biwaters
- Markham Vale
- Land to south of Markham Vale, off Chesterfield Road, Duckmanton
We will also be writing to all those individuals and organisations who have previously expressed an interest in the Plan to notify them of this next stage of Local Plan consultation.
During the six-week period for comments, a series of staffed drop-in exhibition sessions will be held so that local people have an opportunity to come along and explore the proposals in the Plan. The dates, times and locations of these are:

- Monday 13 March 2017 - North Wingfield Community Resource Centre. From 4-7pm

We will consider all representations received. This will feed into the next version of the Local Plan, which will set out proposals in their final form before they are submitted for Examination by an Independent Inspector. Consultation on this document is expected to take place in the autumn of 2017.
Copies of the consultation document, together with representation forms will be available from 24 February 2017 on our website, our main offices at Mill Lane and libraries across the District.

17th February 2017Mortgage Scheme Launched Open or Close
We are working with Bolsover District Council to introduce a Local Authority Mortgage Scheme aimed at helping first-time buyers onto the housing ladder.
As part of the scheme we propose to help people who can afford mortgage repayments, but not a large deposit, to secure a house by providing an indemnity for up to 20% of the total value of the mortgage with the lender.
Our indemnity would only be called upon if the borrower failed to make the repayments or breached the terms of the mortgage and the property was sold at a loss.
The scheme has been launched and will allow first-time buyers to get a 95% mortgage on similar terms as a 75% mortgage but without the large deposit normally required.
A joint statement from Councillor John Ritchie (Cabinet Member for Housing at BDC) and Councillor Bette Hill (Cabinet member for Housing Strategy at NEDDC) , said: “This is a great scheme which helps first time buyers in Bolsover District and North East Derbyshire District get on the property ladder and, at the same time, contribute to the local economy. We are delighted to join forces with one of our local lenders to launch this scheme.”
“If you’re looking to establish your first home then this may be something that will help you do just that, with aspiring home owners able to access up to 95% loans. I would encourage anyone interested to visit their local Leek United Building Society branch and ask about LAMS mortgages.”
Clare Beardmore at Leek United, said: “LAMS has made the opportunity for first-time buyers to get onto the property ladder so much more realistic. We are delighted to be extending the scheme into Derbyshire in a partnership with Bolsover District and North East Derbyshire Councils, to assist homebuyers in our ‘heartland’.”
Under LAMS, almost 70 local authorities have now worked with mortgage lenders and supported 3,900 families and individuals to buy their first home during a time when it was virtually impossible to otherwise obtain a mortgage with a relatively small deposit.
Capita Asset Services works closely with local authorities and supports them in launching their scheme.
Hayley Sullivan, Associate Director at Capita Asset Services, said: “This scheme has been operating successfully in many parts of the UK for over five years and is still helping first time buyers to buy their first home with a lower deposit than usually needed. This innovative scheme has already helped over 3900 people or couples to buy their first home, is stimulating the local housing market and benefitting the wider economy.”
Only first-time buyers with a minimum five per cent deposit who can meet the repayments on a 95 per cent mortgage will be eligible for the council scheme. The potential buyer will also need to meet the normal criteria of the mortgage lender.

14th February 2017Eckington Swimming Pool closes for refurbishment Open or Close
Eckington Swimming Pool will completely close for a month from 9pm on Friday 17 February 2017, as North East Derbyshire District Council continue with their £1.3million transformation programme.
Work to make the centre one of the best in the area, started in October. However, it will now be necessary to close the building completely as the contractors continue with the works. These will include the removal of the small pool, to allow for the refurbishment and extension of the gym from 30 to 50 stations and the provision of a new studio/multi use area.This extension will help the facility accommodate the ever-growing demand for health and fitness activities, meaning for the first time exercise classes will be held at the centre.
New and refurbished equipment will also be available in the gym, giving the users a better experience and more control over their workouts. The reception area will also be given a complete new look that will include a brand new cafe with poolside viewing area and a child focused soft play area. Finally, the changing facilities will be refurbished and turned into ‘universal changing rooms’ that will make them much more family friendly.
Following the modernisation works - which will be completed by mid-March - a new pool timetable will be introduced, meaning the facility will be open for general swimming throughout the week.
Leader of North East Derbyshire District Council, Cllr Graham Baxter MBE, said: “Health and wellbeing is hugely important and this modernised facility will give residents and visitors a much better space and new opportunities to be more active.
“Whilst other authorities are closing leisure centres or outsourcing them, we are bucking this trend and investing heavily in ours to make them sustainable and fit for the 21st century.”
Whilst the refurbishment works take place, casual users and those with membership passes, are welcome to use our two other centres – Dronfield Sports Centre or Sharley Park Leisure Centre, Clay Cross - or have their memberships frozen until the refurbishment is complete, if they get in touch with Eckington Swimming Pool before 20 February 2017.

We are providing excellent customer service – and that’s official!
Our Contact Centre service has been awarded ‘Customer Service Excellence’ which is a government standard for service quality. The service which is based at our headquarters at Mill Lane, Wingerworth has been working towards gaining the standard over the last year.
The assessment is carried out by an external assessor who looks at the quality of the service provision provided, along with the culture of the organisation and the levels of customer satisfaction.
The service was also judged on its accessibility via the phone, internet and email, along with the quality of information provided to customers on the website. The assessment is quite rigorous with 57 different indicators being judged. The Assessor was particularly impressed with the quality of service across a range of different Council services and the high percentage of calls dealt with at first contact.
Council Leader, Councillor Graham Baxter, MBE said, “We are delighted to have gained this award. All our staff are dedicated and enthusiastic and this has been one of the major factors in our success.
“We know from our satisfaction surveys that we provide a good level of customer service at the Council but our Contact Centre has been working towards achieving the Customer Service Excellence standard to confirm this.
“Achieving the standard was one of our key priorities as part of our Corporate Plan. We pride ourselves on supporting the communities we serve and we will continue to improve our customer contact and make sure customers have access to good quality information."

Local communities and residents in North East Derbyshire can now benefit from £385,000 worth of improvements to Dronfield Sports Centre.
We invested the money to expand the extensive range of health and fitness activities offered to help meet the increasing demand for this type of activity.
The fitness suite has been completely refurbished with a new mezzanine floor installed above the previous fitness suite. This has allowed the number of stations to be increased from 58 to 75+.
Users of the facility will also have better access to one-to-one advice and tailored fitness programmes and with the majority of the equipment being replaced to give a better all round experience, there is nowhere in the region better to get fit and keep active.
We have also created a brand new studio/multi use space so more health and fitness classes can be provided such as aerobics, dance and interactive classes.
Council Leader, Councillor Graham Baxter MBE said, “We recognised the demand for health and fitness activities so we took the decision to invest now so we can meet and expand upon our customer’s needs.
“The new facility looks great and is one of the best in the area, so we hope people will enjoy using the latest equipment and modern facilities, all at excellent value for money prices.”

Coalite redevelopment progressing well
Work on a multi-million pound regeneration project to transform the former Coalite site into a thriving business and residential area is progressing well.
The clean-up has been made possible due to grant funding of £2m from Derbyshire County Council and £5.8 m from the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership.
Work started on the site – which has lain derelict since 2004 – in November last year and has seen all the buildings, tanks and pipelines demolished. The below ground works have also started which involves excavating the soils and waste and then sorting and separating it so local bugs living in the soil are encouraged to naturally break down the pollutants.
The Environment Agency, Bolsover Land Ltd and the Council’s want to reassure local residents that all the work is being carried out under strict regulation and environmental permits to minimise, mitigate and manage any risks and ensure appropriate contingency measures are in place on site, after strong odours have been detected over the past couple of weeks.
Council Leader, Councillor Ann Syrett said, “At last we are being able to improve this site you can see the changes on site every day as you drive past and it is remarkable to see what has been achieved in such a short period of time. However regenerating sites such as this mean that odours will be released into the atmosphere. These will be stronger at the start of the project as the ground is disturbed but should improve as work progresses.
“But we want to reassure our communities that we’re working with the Environment Agency and Bolsover Land Ltd to minimise these smells and have controls in place and are regularly monitoring the situation.”
The type of chemicals found on the site are extremely odorous which means that they can be detected in the air at extremely low concentrations. This means that even when they do not cause a risk to health, the odour from the chemicals still needs to be managed effectively as part of the redevelopment works. As part of this process, an odour assessment and an odour management plan were produced by the site operator prior to the works being started and the detection of an odour does not automatically indicate that there is a risk to the wider public via airborne contamination.
North East Derbyshire District Council Leader, Councillor Graham Baxter MBE said, “The remediation of the former Coalite site offers a tremendous opportunity to address this outstanding legacy of the District’s coal mining heritage and bring forward an exciting new development opportunity that will lead to hundreds of new jobs and houses in the local area.”
Once redeveloped the site will form a mix of business (potential to create up to 1,500 jobs) and residential (planning permission for up to 660 properties) with including a Local Centre, an area safeguarded for a school, a Neighbourhood Equipped Areas of Play (NEAP), a Local Equipped Area of Play (LEAP), a Riverside Park, a Local Habitat Area, Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems, footpaths, walkways, cycle paths and landscaping.
Nigel Lax, Development Director for Bolsover Land Limited said, “After four years of planning and working closely with the councils, D2N2 LEP and the Environment Agency, the works to clean up the site marks a key milestone to create hundreds of new jobs and homes.
“To ensure everyone is kept informed we’ve established a community liaison group of local residents, councillors and the Environment Agency. We have also set up a new website and newsletters are being distributed to over 12,000 properties in the local area.
“We’re sorry that there have been reports of increased odour levels and we are currently deploying odour suppressing techniques to reduce odour levels. We will also continue to monitor things closely with the Environment Agency to ensure there is no risk to the public. We are anticipating the odour levels will begin to decrease as we progress with the site’s clean-up.”
The site operator DSM Demolition Ltd has set up a 24/7 telephone number (07774 941 087) for the public to report any incidents or complaints about the site or the remediation works.
The Environment Agency have a 24 hour incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60 which residents can also call.

Holocaust Memorial Day is a national day of commemoration to remember those who suffered during The Holocaust. The day has evolved to remember other genocides including, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
Each year Holocaust Memorial Day is observed on the 27th January. The date marks the liberation of the largest Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz.
Every year a different theme is chosen. This year’s theme is "How can life go on? The focus is on the trauma suffered by those affected by genocide, the coming to terms of the past and moving forward. A full copy of the theme can be found here

13th January 2017Raising awareness of online scams from non-existent charities Open or Close
We are teaming up with the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) to raise awareness of a scam which sees people being conned out of money for non-existent charities.
Fraudsters are believed to be using social media sites to encourage users to donate money to help to support animal welfare charities overseas that do not exist.
The NFIB has discovered that the criminal groups are often based in Spain or Cyprus and are using social media to target donors from the UK.
The money is then laundered from the UK to overseas and rather than be used to tackle animal cruelty it is simply used to support a criminal lifestyle in the sun. They will canvass for contributions through their existing social networks which will expand over time, attracting more donors.
Sometimes the article or post on social media may indicate the payments are for charitable organisation or a “worthy cause”. Sadly not in all instances are these genuine, and if any doubt please undertake your own due diligence.
Other signs to look for include:
- Genuine charities are registered with the Charity Commission and print their registration details on all documentation, collection bags, envelopes, electronic communications etc. Check these details exist and also contact the Charity Commission to confirm they are authentic. You can call them on their helpline 0845 300 0218 or by visiting charity-commission.gov.uk, where they have an online charity register.
- If the collection is for a charity you know is genuine, check the collection is authorised by asking the charity directly, using contact details from the phone book or a website that you know is genuine.
- Watch out for poor grammar and spelling in emails and other documents, including collection envelopes.
- Send your donation to the charity directly. This may mean going to a little more trouble, but at least you can be sure your donation will get to where it’s intended.

12th January 2017Coalite Remediation Works Update Open or Close
Work to decontaminate the former Coalite site is now well underway with good progress being made with most of the site now cleared of all buildings. Work commenced in November 2016 to prepare the site for the remediation works and to demolish the remaining structures. During this time, contractor has also been in the process of submitting information to obtain their environmental permit from the Environment Agency to allow them to commence the full remediation works. We have been involved in this consultation process in conjunction with Public Health England to ensure that all appropriate controls are put in place for this unique site.
21st December 2016Council disappointed with Secretary of State decision Open or Close
A decision by the Secretary of State to over-rule a Planning Inspectors decision has been met with disappointment from the Council.
An application for outline planning permission for the erection of 26 dwellings and garages (including 10 affordable units) on Narrowleys Lane in Ashover was rejected by our Planning Committee in December 2015.
A subsequent appeal was lodged by the applicant (Marsh Green Estates), whch was heard by the Planning Inpector on 24, 25 and 26 May and 9 June 2016 who recommended that the appeal be dismissed
But, on 12 July 2016, this appeal was recovered for the Secretary of State's own determination because it involves a proposal for residential development of over 25 units in an area where a a neighbourhood plan has been submitted to the local authority.
The Secretary of State formally overturned the decision and has now given permission for the development - which will be served from a single access onto Moor Road, and incorporate areas of public open space/play areas and the provision of pedestrian paths - to go ahead.
Council Leader, Councillor Graham Baxter MBE said, “We are very disappointed by this news and are currently reviewing the decision. We have a Planning Committee that has councillors serving on it who have been elected to represent their communities’ views.
“We listened to these views and based our decision on the facts, the information in front of us and our good local knowledge of the area, only for our decision to be overturned by the Secretary of State. As I said we are very disappointed in this decision.”
The decision may be challenged by making an application to the High Court to bring a statutory review under section 288 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.within six-weeks from 20 December 2016.

Would you like to get some free advertising over the festive period?
If so, you can be part of the campaign which is being implemented jointly by your local Council, the Police and the Community Safety Partnership ecouraging people to plan their journey home.
The aim of the campaign is to encourage those people going for a night out drinking to get home safely by planning how they will get home beforehand by pre-booking a licensed taxi or by putting the telephone number of one or two licensed operators in their phone or by copying the website that will be advertised on Peak FM into their phones.
Peak FM will promote the phone numbers of licensed taxis in their area via a radio campaign. The radio and Facebook boosts went live on the 5th December.
You can take part by attaching a magnetic sign to your licensed vehicle/s promoting the campaign.

We are helping the Sheffield City Region Growth Hub promote their smart matching service where clients (businesses/entrepreneurs) are matched with mentors with the right industry background and skills to support their needs.
Mentors are experienced volunteer business professionals, either running their own business or are key business figures, from a wide range of sectors and environments offering tailored 1:1 mentoring support.
Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration, Councillor Pat Kerry said, “Over recent years, business mentoring has become a recognised, valuable tool to help business owners become more successful, profitable and sustainable.

22nd November 2016Council Ward Boundaries Consultation Open or Close
The independent Local Government Boundary Commission for England is asking local people for their help to draw up a new pattern of council wards for Bolsover District Council and North East Derbyshire District Council.
The consultation is the first stage of electoral reviews which will re-draw ward boundaries across both districts.
The Commission has also announced that it is minded to recommend that each council should retain its current number of councillors. For Bolsover, that means 37 councillors should be elected to the council in future. And for North East Derbyshire, 53 councillors will continue to represent the area.
The Commission now needs information from local people and groups to help it to produce a new pattern of wards to accommodate councillors across both districts.
In drawing up new boundaries, the Commission aims to deliver electoral equality for voters in council elections so that each councillor represents roughly the same number of voters. The review also aims to ensure that the new council wards reflect, as far as possible, the interests and identities of communities across the districts.
Professor Colin Mellors, Chair of the Commission, said: “We are asking local people and organisations to help us draw up new wards for North East Derbyshire and Bolsover District Councils. As we develop the recommendations for each council, we will take into account local community identities as well as ensuring electoral equality for voters.
“If you have a view about which communities or neighbourhoods should be part of the same council ward, then we want to hear from you. And if you think a road, river or railway makes for a strong boundary between communities in your area, then this consultation is for you. Alternatively, if you’re simply interested in the way your council is run, just log on to our website to explore our interactive maps and have your say.
“Your views will make a difference.
“We will carefully consider all evidence that is provided during this phase of the review whoever it is from and whether it applies to the whole of your district or just a small part of it.
“Residents will then have a further chance to have their say after we publish our draft recommendations for both councils in April 2017.”
Local people have until 30 January 2017 to submit their views. Further information on the review and interactive maps of the existing wards can be found on the Local Government Boundary Commission for England website.

14th November 2016North East Derbyshire’s Emerson retains title at 2016 Derby Telegraph Sports Awards Open or Close
Athlete Niamh Emerson was the toast of North East Derbyshire for the second year running as she retained her title of Young Sportswoman of the Year at last night’s (November 10) 2016 Derby Telegraph Sports Awards, held in Association with Derbyshire Sport and Champions UK.
The 17-year-old heptathlete was among the headline winners at the prestigious ceremony, staged at the Roundhouse in Derby, which brought together the leading contenders from across the county in elite and grass roots sport.
Amber Valley and Erewash AC member Niamh saw off stiff competition in her category from Chesterfield sprint hurdler Alicia Barrett, a finalist at the World Junior Championships, and Ashbourne’s Isobel Brown, a skiing competitor for Great Britain at the Youth Winter Olympics and World Junior Championships.
The Shirland teenager, who is on the Derbyshire Institute of Sport (DIS) programme, has put in some stellar performances to beat the British age group record twice in 2016, win a European Junior Championships heptathlon bronze medal and a Commonwealth Youth Games gold medal in high jump.
It has led many to compare her to outstanding past and present British heptathletes including Jessica Ennis-Hill, Katerina Johnson-Thompson and Denise Lewis.
“It’s really good to get the recognition for a second time and win what is a very prestigious award,” said Niamh. “This last year has been my best yet and I feel like I am getting better year on year. “I didn’t really expect to do as well as I did and get so many points, so that just made it even better. I’ll just keep training hard now to hopefully keep improving. “My top target is to qualify for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia in 2018. Qualifying is next year, which makes it a bit tougher, but I’ll give it my best shot.”
There was more cause for celebration in the Manager/Coach of the Year category where North East Derbyshire’s Alan Cooke was named as a runner-up to Mel Marshall, coach of Olympic gold medallist Adam Peaty. The former international table tennis player, from Lower Pilsley, has been coaching Chesterfield’s Liam Pitchford, who competed for Great Britain at this summer’s Olympics in the singles and team events.
The evening was hosted by television presenter and sports reporter Gary Newbon and weather presenter Emma Jesson and saw around 300 guests in attendance, with money raised for Rainbows Children's Hospice.

7th November 2016Coalite regeneration work starts Open or Close
We are delighted to say that work to clean-up of the former Coalite works site will start on Tuesday 8 November 2016.
Grant funding has been secured from Derbyshire County Council and D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership to the tune of £7.8m to help with the clean-up and this success would not have been possible without the hard work and support of all parties, particularly the elected members and officers of Bolsover and North East Derbyshire District Council's and Derbyshire County Council.
Bolsover Land Ltd, a joint venture between Marcol and St Francis Group, acquired the site in 2012 and the beginning of the remediation works marks a key milestone for the project and is a fantastic boost for the local community and wider area. Since the site was closed by the previous owners it has been a long road to get to this point.
The funding will help kick-start the regeneration of the site and it is felt that this will become a benchmark for how the public and private sector can work together to transform a large and challenging industrial site to create hundreds of new homes and jobs.
Close working between the councils and the Environment Agency will take place during the remediation process and in the next seven weeks works will include Asbestos removal, emptying, cleaning and purging of tanks and pipelines and demolition of above ground structures and tanks.
A community engagement plan will be produced which will include, regular community newsletters, updating the website and re-establishing the Community Liaison Group.
Market interest in the site remains strong, despite general economic uncertainty post Brexit and we very much look forward to updating you further throughout the remediation process and as and when firm interest in both operator and housebuilder interest is available.

7th November 2016BT payphone kiosk consultation Open or Close
BT are currently consulting on the proposed removal of a number of payphone kiosks across the District.
These payphones have been selected by BT because they have had no or very little use over the last 12-months. As part of the consultation notices have been placed on the kiosks affected by the proposals. The consultation ends on 16 December 2016.
7th November 2016Anglers Charity Donation Open or Close
A local cancer charity has benefitted from the goodwill of a group of anglers as they donated £350 from their charity angling matches.
The money has been donated to North East Derbyshire District Council’s Chairmans charity – Weston Park Cancer Charity – from Clay Cross Angling Association in conjuction with Marshalls Electrical.
They have been holding charity matches for the past 20 years and have always donated money to the Council Chair’s Appeal.
They held seven angling matches throughout 2016 at Wingerworth Lido and the Wallpond and this years winner was Martyn Jacques, based on an aggregate score of the matches.
Council Chair, Councillor Stephen Peters said, “The angling association have been very supportive of our charities over the years and I was delighted and thrilled to receive the £350 donation. The generosity of local community organisations such as this is essential in making sure we can continue to raise money in our fight against cancer.”
The money raised by the Council Chair for Weston Park Cancer Charity will fund various projects to enable the continued improvement of Weston Park Hospital, which is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire.

27th October 2016Winter Suspension For Green Bins Open or Close
Residents across North East Derbyshire District are being reminded that their green bin collections will be suspended during the winter months.
Green bin collections will stop from end of November 2016 and resume in March 2017. Suspension dates will differ dependent on where you live in the District, so please refer to bin calendars that will be delivered to your property during November 2016. The service is being suspended as demand from householders significantly falls over the winter period when people are less active in their garden.
There will be no change to the black and burgundy bin collections, but to help households with the extra waste generated over the festive period there will be extra black bin collections during this period.
On average around 10,000 tonnes of garden waste is collected at the kerbside each year, but past trends show that there is very little grass cutting, weeding or hedge trimming takes place in winter.
If residents do have jobs to do around the garden during the winter, this can be stored along with uncooked vegetable peelings in the green bin to be collected in the spring, or taken to their nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre. Residents are also reminded they can put their cooked food leftovers in their black bins during the green bin suspension period.
Staff who normally undertake green bin collections will be used in other areas such as street cleansing and grounds maintenance to enhance those services.
Waste and recycling collection calendars will also be delivered to households across the area during November informing residents of the collection arrangements for Christmas 2016 and throughout 2017.
The green bin collections will resume week in March 2017 and for more information on waste and recycling collections please refer to the calendars delivered to your household in November.
12th October 2016New academy has designs on urban communities Open or Close
Over 60 organisations and businesses gathered to attend the launch event, Urban Design- Its Not Just For Cities, Making Small Towns Great Places, of the Urban Design Academy (UDA) at North East Derbyshire District Council’s offices on Friday 30th September.
Delegates from across the public and private sector were treated to presentations from some of the key players in this field including Matthew Carmona ,Professor of Planning and Urban Design ,The Bartlett School of Planning, Kevin McGeough Head of Strategy and Placemaking, Ebbsfleet and David Rudlin Director of URBED( Urbanism Envrionment Design).
Topics discussed included landscape, community engament , community wellbeing and sustainable regeneration and how to make great places in areas of lower value.
Event chair Robert Huxford from the Urban Design Group said “This new Community Interest Company is a great innovation and will not only be a champion for good urban design but also provide a vehicle for sharing best practice, learning and training.”
Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor Michael Gordon and UDA Board Chair said, “We set up the Urban Design Academy in 2010 but felt it would be better suited as a social enterprise, this allows the orgnaisation to operate across the UK , but any income generated is ploughed back into Derbyshire to benefit the local communities.
“The conference speakers were first class and gave a very interesting insight into how good urban design can positively affect peoples lives. It is up to local authorities, planning consultants, housebuilders and developers to make sure we put these ideas into practice for the benefit of our local communities.”
The UDA has four main aims:
- Understanding – the need that design quality is essential in creating sustainable palces
- Influencing – the public and provate sector to ue mechanisms to influence design standards
- Delvering – more great places and buildings are developed for everyone
- Striving – to translate latest academic research findings into practice to keep pushing the boundaries and always streaming for the latest academic advice available.
28th September 2016ICON athletes out to emulate Rio medallists Peaty and White Open or Close
Some of North East Derbyshire’s most talented sports stars have been handed leisure passes as part of the ICON programme that boasts summer Olympic and Paralympic medallists Adam Peaty and Lewis White as past and present recipients.
A total of 16 athletes have received the backing, which will allow them to improve their strength and conditioning in their chosen sport.
They were notified of that support as part of the North East Derbyshire District Sports Awards last night (September 26), held at the North East Derbyshire District Council offices in Wingerworth.
Several of the athletes will also be given a financial bursary package to assist with their training, equipment and travel costs, although the ICON panel has yet to meet to consider those individual applications.
All who have applied are tipped for further success in their respective sports and have either been selected to compete for Great Britain or a home nation, have won a national championship medal, are part of a recognised national development squad or club academy structure or are a member of the Derbyshire Institute of Sport (DIS).
Those who will receive leisure passes include athletes Caitlin Emerson (Shirland), Niamh Emerson (Shirland), Gabriel Gisborne (Dronfield), Tilly Simpson (Eckington) and Calli Thackery (Killamarsh) and swimmers Amy Bell (Killamarsh), Imogen Clark (Morton), Joshua Pemberton (Clay Cross) and Jessie Westnidge (Marsh Lane).
Also supported are cyclist William Gascoyne (Wingerworth) and Adam Morewood (Dronfield Woodhouse), boxer Jade Ashmore (Heath), fencer Matthew Cooper (Dronfield Woodhouse), cricketer Bess Heath (Holymoorside), skier Millie Wilkinson (Dronfield Woodhouse) and footballer Billy-Lee Dixon (Dronfield).
Cllr Graham Baxter, North East Derbyshire District Council’s Leader and Portfolio Holder for Leisure met athletes to hand over their leisure passes. He said, “Our talented athletes have to give up so much, make huge sacrifices and, in many cases, travel great distances to compete. Any help that North East Derbyshire District Council can give them to make their task that little but easier is no more than they deserve.”
We are among 10 local authorities across the county who are members of ICON, which was set up by Derbyshire Sport as part of the work to create a lasting legacy from the London 2012 Olympics in Derbyshire.
Since then, the programme has supported 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Caroline Povey (shooting), 2015 European Games gold medallist Abbie Wood (swimming) and 2016 Olympians Liam Pitchford (table tennis) and Molly Renshaw (swimming) in addition to swimming stars Peaty and White.
28th September 2016Sporting heroes honoured by council Open or Close
The top sportspeople from across North East Derbyshire District have been honoured for their talent and commitment at our annual Sports Awards ceremony.
Eight awards were presented to athletes, coaches and teams that recognised and celebrated their sporting successes and achievements in sport at all levels across North East Derbyshire.
The winners ranged from a UCI World Champion (Adam Morewood) and an English Boxing Champion (Jade Ashmore) to a Team GB table tennis coach (Alan Cooke) and a coach who dedicates his life to swimming (Chris Jones).
North East Derbyshire District Council’s Leader, Councillor Graham Baxter MBE said, “I have stood here for over 10 years now, watching talented athletes grow up, mature and become leading sports men and women in their field – and I’m still amazed at the amount, and quality of talent that we have here in North East Derbyshire.
“I would like to not only congratulate all the winners on their success, but everyone who was nominated for these awards as without them, sport in North East Derbyshire District would not be as good as it is today.”

23rd September 2016Injunction order for nightmare neighbour Open or Close
A woman from Renishaw who had caused 10 years worth of hell to her neighbours has been hit with an Injunction Order and made to pay over £1,450 in costs.
Jill Johnson was issued with the 5 year Order by the County Court in Nottingham after they had heard she had subjected her neighbours to a continuous stream of anti social behaviour, which included using foul, abusive and insulting language and banging on the walls of the adjoining property.
We applied to the Court for the injunction after complaints from Johnsons neighbours and nearby residents had increased.
She would also try and get her neighbours into trouble by reporting fictitious noise nuisance, crime, animal and child cruelty and anti social behaviour to the authorities – all of which were investigated and unfounded.
The Council had also received complaints from local residents that Johnson had shouted at and verbally abused very young children for playing in the cul-de-sac where she lived.
Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Councillor Jeff Lilley said, “This is a case of one person making a communities lives a living hell – something which we simply will not put up with. We had tried to talk with the defendant and offer our help and assistance, but she just brushed this aside and continued with the abuse. So we took the decision that enough was enough and we would let the Courts deal with the matter.
“We are delighted with the Courts decision and the residents and communities in the area can now get on with their lives and enjoy the peace and quiet of their homes.”
31st August 2016£1.7m investment in leisure facilities Open or Close
We are injecting over £1.7m into two of our leisure centres, to create state of the art facilities for all to enjoy.
The investment will focus on both Dronfield Sports Centre and Eckington Swimming Pool and further promote our drive to increase participation in physical activity.
The investment in each facility is as follows:
Eckington Swimming Pool
- Extend the current health and fitness provision from 30 stations to 50 stations by creating a new gym space by removing the small pool provision and extending the current fitness suite into half of the existing small pool provision.
- Create a new studio/multi use space for health and fitness classes in the remaining half of the existing small pool provision.
- Create a child focused soft play area with new poolside viewing and vending area.
- Replace the existing male and female changing areas with ‘Universal Village’ changing facilities.
- Redesign the front of house reception and staffing areas.
- Refurbish the pool plant system
Work at Eckington is due to start on 31 October and is likely to last for three-months, with certain parts of the facility closed at different times.
Dronfield Sports Centre
- Extend the current health and fitness provision by the creation of a new mezzanine floor above the existing fitness suite increasing the total number of stations from 58 to 75 plus functional training facilities.
- Create a new studio/multi use space for health and fitness classes by removing the current sauna provision.
Work at Dronfield is due to start on 26 September and is likely to last for 10 weeks, with certain parts of the facility closed at different times.
Council Leader, Councillor Graham Baxter MBE said, “We have looked at the facilities currently available and undertaken a detailed analysis of what is popular and what is generating the most usage and income. There is a huge demand for health and fitness related activities and for us to be able to compete with private facilities then we must meet this demand. So we are investing in these areas to make sure our facilities are fit for purpose and fulfil what our customers want.”
There are nearly 500,000 attendances into Dronfield and Eckington leisure facilities each year and over 1,700 members who are benefitting from one of our membership schemes, with thousands more enjoying our structured health and fitness classes and casual swimming provision.
Councillor Baxter MBE added, “With a greater public awareness of physical activity and all the national campaigns to improve health and well being we feel that investing in our facilities will help the thousands of residents who exercise in them every day so they can continue to enjoy the latest equipment and modern facilities at value for money prices.”
25th August 2016Closure order on problem property Open or Close
We have obtained a Court Order to board up a rented dwelling in Eckington after local residents were subjected to suspected drug related activity and anti social behaviour.
The Closure Order was granted on 25 August from the Magistrates Court after the tenant subjected local residents and neighbours to continuous anti social behaviour (ASB) and distress.
Both ourselves and the Police had received a series of complaints about anti social behaviour and alleged crime from the property which affected local people’s quality of life. We, together with the property owners, Guinness Partnership, had tried on several occasions to talk to the individual to resolve the problems but the tenant refused all contact.
The Court granted the Order as they believed that the use of the premises has resulted in serious nuisance to members of the public and the Order is necessary to prevent the nuisance or disorder from continuing.
Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Councillor Jeff Lilley said, “We made several attempts to talk to the tenant and sort out the problems, but they simply would not talk to us. So, in the interests of the community, we obtained a Closure Order that will remove the problems completely and allow local people to sleep easy at night and enjoy their properties and quality of life.
“It’s simply not acceptable for people to do what they want with no regard for others and this should serve as a warning that we will not put up with crime and anti social behaviour of any type and we will take the toughest measures at our disposal to tackle the problem.”
Sgt James Shirley said, “Antisocial behaviour can ruin people’s lives, this is a great example of communities pulling together to stand up to ASB, and utilise the law to make the community better for all.”
The Closure Order is for three-months, but the Council can also apply for a three-month extension prior to the expiry of the Order and it is an offence if any person tries to enter the property.
18th August 2016Paper Caddy Thefts On The Rise Open or Close
Residents from across the District are being warned against the theft of paper caddies from their burgundy bins.
Over the past couple of months’ we have seen an increase in reports of caddies being stolen from bins. Residents have reported seeing people in a white van remove the caddies after the bins have been emptied, and then they try to sell them back to households on their doorstep.
Together with our burgundy bin refuse collection partner, HW Martin, we will now mark any replacement caddies with post codes, so if any caddies are stolen, they can track them better and see if there is a pattern to where they are being taken from and sold onto.
The burgundy bins have proved extremely popular with residents since their introduction in 2011 and the caddies are used to separate paper from other recyclable materials.
Residents can help reduce these thefts by taking in their bins as soon as possible after they have been emptied and if they see anything suspicious please contact the Council immediately on 01246 231111 or via our Online Forms section.

Calendars showcasing the beautiful North East Derbyshire countryside are now on sale, in support of our Chair’s Appeal.
The 2017 calendar, produced by us, features stunning shots of some of the area’s best loved landmarks and landscapes, including a snow covered Shirland, the Flying Scotsman passing through New Tupton, swans on Wingerworth Lido, boats sailing on Ogston Reservoir, Renishaw Hall and jaw-dropping views over Ashover.
Council Chair, Councillor Stephen Peters, said: “We are so lucky our area has such amazing scenery and we’ve been able to capture some of it in this calendar. Network Rail To Take Over Dronfield Car Park
A public car park in Dronfield which has been managed and maintained by us for the past 30 years is set to go back into the ownership of Network Rail.
We leased Dronfield Railway Station car park from Network Rail to stop it being closed and falling into disrepair and currently pay Network Rail a lease fee of £1,000 per year, plus paying for maintenance costs.
Since taking it over, we have regularly maintained the 46 space car park and made it free to use for the public. Our foresight all them years ago, not only stopped the car park from being closed, but kept it in a good state of repair which has proved beneficial to the local community and rail passengers for the past 30-years.
Council Leader, Councillor Graham Baxter MBE said, “We took on the lease all those years ago to stop the car park being closed and provide a free public car park for our residents and visitors to the town.
“It’s cost us thousands of pounds every year to maintain and local groups have been asking us to spend more on the site, which we simply cannot do as it’s not our land. So we welcome Network Rail taking back responsibility for this car park and their land.
“We have always had a good long standing relationship with Network Rail and when Dronfield Station re-opened, we helped to promote the rail service and offered subsidies to help keep the service running – something which has benefitted local people and the town in general.”
It is understood that Network Rail will continue to use the area as a car park, but its usage may be restricted to rail passengers only.
Voluntary termination of the lease is currently in the hands of legal representatives, but it’s anticipated that the car park will be formally handed over in the next few months.
