Culture Vultures – your new directory of arts groups, clubs and societies!

Culture Vultures is a new directory of arts groups, clubs and societies in Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire with over 100 entries on everything from arts and crafts to film and photography by way of music, dance, and drama.

Culture Vultures aims to help people find a local group or activity and join in by providing meeting times and contact details for groups across the area.

Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire are rich in cultural and arts activity – people everywhere are dancing, painting, singing, taking photos, getting together to enjoy the arts in all forms. Taking part in arts activity is more than just fun, it’s good for you! There is now considerable evidence that shows participation in arts improves peoples’ sense of wellbeing.

Lack of information has been identified in a recent study as one of the key reasons why people do not engage in the arts. The study, of 4,300 people commissioned by Derbyshire Arts Partnership was carried out by the Cultural Consortium. It found that 26% blamed lack of information while 34.5% identified lack of time and 32.8% cost as the reason why they didn’t attend arts events.

Culture Vultures has been put together by Arts Development Officers for both Chesterfield Borough Council and North East Derbyshire District Council. The directory is available free in libraries and from the Tourist Information Office, Rykneld Square, (next to the ‘Crooked Spire’) Chesterfield S40 1SB.

Culture Vultures is also available as a downloadable pdf document at the bottom of this page. If you would like a copy of Culture Vultures, or to add or update information, please contact the arts officers.

Music in Care Homes - an exciting new project for NED!

Music in care homes is a brand new project for North East Derbyshire District Council and their partners – Arts Council England, The National Lottery, Live Music Now! and Derbyshire PCT.

Arts Development at North East Derbyshire District Council has secured almost £20,000 worth of funding to improve the health & wellbeing of older people with dementia.

The money will fund a series of interactive musical sessions in care and residential homes to awaken and stimulate memories in people suffering from dementia.

Professional musicians will use their talent and skills to deliver enjoyable music sessions, which will focus on familiar repertoire to stimulate the participants and will involve them in voice work, rhythm, gentle movement, and participation. As the project progresses it is hoped that the participants will become more engaged and involved in creating their own music, songs and spoken word.

Local school children will also be invited to participate in this scheme in order to create more musical opportunities and build links to care homes.

The funds support the council’s priority work to improve health and wellbeing.

The  pages on this site only give a brief overview of what is going on locally, for more detailed and county wide information see the wide range of resources on the Arts Derbyshire website.
