This part of our Leisure Service is delivered by the Sports Development Section. It was established in 1987 with the aim of increasing participation in sport and recreation at all levels. Particular attention is given to promoting and developing schemes for disadvantaged and minority groups such as the unwaged, disabled people, senior citizens, women, and young people.
The Sports Development Team is based at the Council Offices at Chesterfield and is led by Barrie Murfin. The nature of the unit's work is essentially community based and delivering a wide range of schemes linked with both local and national initiatives such as Long Term Athletic Development (LTAD), The Community Coaching Scheme, Sports College and The Integrated Disabled Sports Club, working in schools and the community.
The unit is a key contact point for www.derbyshiresport.co.uk, local clubs, Parish Councils, Schools, governing bodies of sport and community groups.
Advice, support and information is available across a wide range of areas from grant funding to partnership working and coach education.
