Have you set yourself New Year resolutions this year?

Are they any of the following?

  • I’ll stop eating chocolate from now on
  • I’m going to get fit this year
  • I want to lose weight before my holiday
  • I’m going to join a gym this year
  • I’ll walk the dog every day

But how long before your New Year resolutions start to lapse? If they do don't worry.

Follow the ‘SMART’ rule to achieve your goals:

S = Specific

Set yourself a specific goal to achieve (i.e. I will start swimming to help me get fit, rather than I will get fit this year).

M = Measurable

Set yourself a set number of lengths/repetitions to complete to start with, and as your fitness improves you should be able to complete more and more.

A = Achievable

Make sure the goal you set yourself is achievable for you - it needs to be hard enough to make you work at it but not so far in expectation that you can never get there. Set yourself smaller goals to allow you to get the the bigger one

R = Realistic

Can you see that with some hard work and commitment to your goal you could achieve it, maybe if you’re just starting out at running aim to train for a 10km run before planning to complete that marathon.

T = Time

Give yourself a time scale to achieve your goal, otherwise there’s always tomorrow.

Go on then, start your goal setting for a healthier, more active 2007!

Good Luck!
